On the modern dining table sat no pot of humble beans, no hurried meals, and no shadow of deception. Instead, the table was adorned with a magnificent celebratory feast: traditional roast pork, sweet corn tamales, fresh tropical fruits, and sparkling cider chilling in an ice bucket.
Mariana and Chloe sat together at the head of the table, laughing and clinking their crystal glasses filled with sparkling cider.
"To new beginnings, to absolute freedom, and to never letting anyone make us lower our eyes," Mariana toasted, looking lovingly into her daughter's bright, happy eyes.
"To us, Mommy," Chloe cheered, clinking her glass proudly against her mother's.
