Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT AUDITAt 2:14 AM, miles away across the mist-shrouded hills of the Hudson Valley, Arden House loomed like a stone fortress.

Inside the mahogany-paneled study, Caleb Arden paced across the Persian rug, his wool coat finally discarded. Across from him sat Victoria Arden, his imperious mother, her silver hair pulled back into a severe chignon that defied her seventy-two years. A cup of chamomile tea sat untouched on her antique desk.

“She refused?” Victoria asked, her voice like grinding glass.

“She wanted to read the clauses,” Caleb snapped, slamming his palm onto the desk. “She’s playing games, Mother. The bank auditors arrive at nine o’clock. If the primary beneficiary signature isn’t logged alongside the maternal acknowledgment, the trust freeze triggers. We lose everything.”

“You should have handled her months ago,” Victoria said coldly. “I told you that middle-class girl from a contractor's family would lack the killer instinct required to carry the Arden name.”

“She’s exhausted from the C-section—”

“Excuses!” Victoria stood up, her posture rigid. “Alastair’s will was explicit. The four hundred and twenty million is locked in the primary holding corporation. Without a legitimate, undisputed heir bound by the Continuity Trust, the entire estate reverts to the state-chartered philanthropic foundation. Do you hear me, Caleb? We become paupers overnight. The debt we accumulated against the future payout will crush us.”

Caleb swallowed hard. The multi-million dollar loans he had taken out against the expected $420 million windfall were coming due. His lifestyle, his yacht club memberships, his social standing—all of it was built on a foundation of smoke and mirrors.

“I’ll go back at dawn,” Caleb muttered, running a hand through his hair. “I’ll force her hand. Once she signs, Jonah becomes a non-factor until he’s twenty-one, and the money is ours to redistribute.”

Victoria smiled, a thin, cruel parting of her lips. “See that you do. Because if you fail, I will disown you myself.”
