Chapter 4 - THE TRAP CLOSESMara stared at the lawyer, the words refusing to process in her sleep-deprived brain.

“To... to me?” she repeated, her voice shaking. “That’s impossible. I’m just an ordinary woman. My father is a contractor.”

“Your grandfather, Thomas Ellison, saved Alastair Arden’s life during the mill strike of 1974,” Arthur revealed, tracing a finger down a faded legal signature. “Old Alastair distrusted his own bloodline because he knew they were vultures. He set up a fail-safe clause. If his grandson turned out to be a financial degenerate—which Caleb is, having leveraged the estate into massive debt—the trust bypassed the Arden family completely and vested its ownership into the hands of the mother of the next generation, provided she was an Ellison.”

Martin Ellison dropped his keys. They hit the linoleum floor with a sharp clatter.

“My father?” Martin breathed, his eyes wide. “Thomas Ellison? Alastair never spoke about that publicly.”

“Alastair was a private man, but he kept his promises,” Arthur said. “Caleb found out about this clause three days ago when the bank ran a comprehensive title search on the trust assets. That is why he rushed to marry you, Mara. That is why he was desperate to get your signature on those papers this morning. He wasn't having you sign as a co-beneficiary... he was having you sign a power-of-attorney waiver transferring all fiduciary rights back to him under false pretenses.”

Mara looked down at the silver pen resting on her palm.

Caleb’s parting words echoed in her ears with terrifying clarity: “Keep it. You’ll need it.”

He had expected her to sign blindly. He had planned to take her signature, execute the waiver, and legally strip her of the four hundred and twenty million dollars that rightfully belonged to her and her newborn son.

“If I don’t sign,” Mara said slowly, her voice hardening into steel, “what happens at sunrise?”

“At sunrise—which is in less than twenty minutes—the bank auditors will formally verify the ownership transfer,” Arthur said grimly. “Caleb will be locked out of the accounts permanently. And you will be legally confirmed as the sole controller of the $420 million Arden estate.”

Helen let out a breathless laugh, a mix of disbelief and vindication. “Oh, my God. That’s why he was sweating through his suit.”

Mara looked down at Jonah, who yawned and stretched his tiny fingers. The fear that had gripped her chest moments ago vanished, replaced by a cold, calculated fury.

“He called my son a liability,” Mara whispered, her eyes flashing. “He wanted to throw us away like trash.”

She picked up the silver pen.

“Mr. Pendelton, where do I need to be at nine o’clock?”
