Chapter 6 - THE FREEZEThe shock wave hit Arden House before noon.

Within four hours of the boardroom confrontation, Hans Keller’s team executed a full asset freeze across all personal and corporate accounts tied to Caleb and Victoria Arden. Credit cards linked to the family trust were declined at luxury boutiques on Fifth Avenue. The maintenance accounts for the sprawling Hudson Valley estate were locked. Even the private security detail received notice that their contracts were under review by the new primary trustee.

Caleb sat in the darkened study of Arden House, staring blankly at a bottle of scotch he couldn't afford to replace. The mahogany walls, once symbols of unassailable power, now felt like the interior of a gilded cage.

The heavy oak door creaked open. Victoria walked in. She looked twenty years older, her regal posture cracked by the sudden, brutal reality of their downfall.

“They locked the Swiss accounts,” Victoria whispered, her voice devoid of its usual venom. “The banks are demanding immediate collateral for the real estate loans. If we don’t pay sixty million by the end of the week, the estate goes into receivership.”

Caleb didn’t look up. “Where is the money, Mother? You managed the family finances for decades. There must be hidden reserves.”

“Alastair hid nothing,” Victoria spat bitterly. “He trusted no one except that dead builder’s bloodline. We are entirely at Mara’s mercy.”

Caleb clenching his fists so hard his nails bit into his palms. The humiliation burned hotter than anger. He had spent his entire life looking down on people like Mara and her father—people who built things with their hands, who lived modest lives, who valued human life over corporate ledgers. Now, he was completely dependent on the woman he had tried to discard like a broken piece of machinery.

“I’ll talk to her,” Caleb muttered, standing up with a desperate glint in his eye. “She still cares about me. We have a child together. I’ll make her see reason.”

Victoria let out a dry, humorless laugh. “Go ahead, Caleb. But look in a mirror first. You’re no longer an Arden heir. You’re a beggar knocking at the door of an Ellison.”
