Chapter 2 - The Silent House

By midnight, the eighty guests were gone, leaving behind half-eaten catering trays and an oppressive, suffocating silence.
Daniel sat at the kitchen island, his head buried in his hands. Lily had locked herself in her bedroom upstairs, refusing to speak to either of us.
"How long?" Daniel asked, his voice hollow. He didn't look up. "How long have you been digging through my family’s affairs behind my back?"
"Since I noticed the foundation was claiming a three-million-dollar deficit while Richard bought a new yacht in Monaco, Daniel," I said, setting a mug of black coffee in front of him. "I didn't start this to hurt you. I started this because your father was using our daughter’s name to launder money."
Daniel finally looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "Launder money? Claire, he’s a billionaire! He doesn't need to steal fifty grand a year using Lily’s tuition."
"He isn't stealing fifty grand, Daniel," I said softly, sitting opposite him. "The fifty grand was just the cover story he used for the family. He told you and Patricia he was paying for Lily so no one would ask why money was moving out of the charity account. The actual amount moving through Aegis Holdings over the last four years is close to twelve million dollars."
Daniel blinked, the numbers failing to register. "Twelve million? That’s impossible. The foundation doesn't even bring in that much in annual donations."
"Exactly," I said, leaning forward. "Which means the money isn't coming from standard donors. It's coming from somewhere else. And that brings me to the text I received tonight."
I pulled out my phone and slid it across the marble countertop, displaying the anonymous message. Daniel stared at the screen, his face turning an ash-gray color.
"What is this?" he whispered.
"You tell me," I said, my voice hardening. "The text tells me to look at the 2024 Aegis transactions and look for your signature. Daniel, did you sign any corporate restructuring documents for your father last year?"
Daniel swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the hallway. "My dad... he asked me to sign some standard corporate governance paperwork. He said it was for the estate planning. To make sure Lily and I were protected if anything happened to him. I didn't read the fine print, Claire. You know how he is! He hands you a stack of papers at Sunday dinner, tells you it's handled, and you sign it!"
"You signed legal documents for an offshore shell company without reading them?" I stood up, the panic finally breaking through my professional composure. "Daniel, as a forensic accountant, do you know what that makes you? It makes you the perfect fall guy."
"He wouldn't do that to me," Daniel said, his voice rising in denial. "I'm his son! His only son!"
"He just stood in front of eighty people and called your daughter ungrateful while stealing her identity for financial fraud!" I snapped. "Wake up, Daniel! Richard Halstead doesn't love people. He uses them. And right now, he has used you to put a noose around your own neck."
Before Daniel could argue, the front door bell rang. A sharp, aggressive chime that shattered the silence of the night.
Daniel and I exchanged a look. I walked to the foyer, my heart hammering against my ribs, and opened the door.
Standing on the porch wasn't Richard. It was two men in dark gray suits. One of them held up a badge that gleamed under the porch light.
"Claire Halstead?" the man asked, his voice devoid of emotion. "I’m Special Agent Vance with the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division. This is Agent Miller from the FBI. We have a federal warrant to seize all financial records, digital devices, and documents related to the Halstead Foundation and Aegis Holdings."
I froze. I hadn't leaked the documents yet. I had only shown them to the family four hours ago.
"Who called you?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Agent Vance didn't blink. "An anonymous tip was submitted to our fraud hotline two hours ago, complete with a digital copy of a blue folder currently sitting on your kitchen counter. Step aside, please."
Hook: Someone had anticipated my move, stolen my data before the party even ended, and weaponized the feds against us—and as the agents marched into my kitchen, they went straight past me and put the handcuffs on my husband.
