Chapter 3 - The Scapegoat’s Trap

"Mom! What's happening?!" Lily screamed from the top of the stairs, clutching her robe tightly around her.

"Stay upstairs, Lily! Don't come down!" I shouted back, but my voice was drowned out by the chaotic sounds of federal agents moving through our home.

They had Daniel pinned against the marble kitchen island, his hands cuffed behind his back.

"Sir, you are being detained under suspicion of wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to defraud the United States government," Agent Vance recited, his voice monotone as he adjusted the plastic zip-ties on Daniel's wrists.

"I didn't do anything! It was my father! Richard Halstead!" Daniel screamed, his face pressed against the cold stone. "Claire, tell them! Show them the ledger!"

I rushed to the counter where the blue folder had been sitting, but Agent Miller had already bagged it in clear plastic.

"Agent Vance, wait," I said, stepping between him and my husband. "I'm a forensic accountant. I compiled those files. If you look at the transfer authorizations, the primary beneficiary of Aegis Holdings is Richard—"

"Actually, Mrs. Halstead, we looked at the digital attachments provided by the tipster," Agent Vance interrupted, pulling out a tablet. He turned the screen toward me. "According to the corporate registration filed in December of 2024, the sole managing director and 100% shareholder of Aegis Holdings is Daniel Halstead. His signature is notarized on every single wire transfer."

I stared at the screen. The signature was Daniel’s. It wasn't even a good forgery—it was his actual, messy handwriting. The exact signature he used when he signed things quickly without looking.

Richard hadn't just used Daniel as a shield; he had completely removed his own name from the illegal entity a year ago, leaving Daniel holding a twelve-million-dollar bomb.

"Daniel, you idiot," I breathed, the horror sinking in.

"Claire, I swear I didn't know!" Daniel wept as they began walking him toward the door. "He told me it was a trust fund for Lily! He told me it was her inheritance!"

As they led Daniel out into the dark, rainy night, flashing red and blue lights illuminated our quiet suburban street. Neighbors peeked through their blinds.

I stood in the open doorway, my mind racing through numbers, dates, and legal statutes. I needed the original foundation servers. I needed the raw, unedited data logs before Richard had the chance to wipe them.

My phone buzzed again. The same unknown number.

“The feds have the surface files, Claire. But they don't have the secondary ledger. Richard keeps it in the safe at the foundation headquarters. The code is Lily’s birthday. You have until 6:00 AM before the shredding trucks arrive.”

I stared at the text. Lily's birthday? Richard hated Lily. He didn't even know her graduation date, let alone her birthday. Why would he use that as a safe combination?

Unless... Richard didn't set the code.

I looked up at the stairs. Lily was standing there, staring at me, her eyes wide with a strange, analytical calm that didn't match the tears on her cheeks.

"Lily," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "Who sent me this text?"

Lily walked down the stairs slowly, her voice completely steady. "The same person who gave you the hint to look at the foundation's irregularities six months ago, Mom. Did you really think you found those files all by yourself?"

Hook: My twenty-two-year-old daughter hadn't just known about the fraud—she was the one who had guided me to discover it, and she was the one who had just sent her own father to jail.
