Chapter 6 - The Summa Cum Laude Revenge

"Put the notebook on the desk, Claire," Richard ordered, his voice echoing off the glass windows. The security guards closed the distance, blocking the only exit to the elevator.

I didn't move. I kept my hand flat against the leather notebook. "You're funding illegal human trials, Richard. If this gets out, it’s not a country-club prison sentence. You'll die in a federal maximum-security facility."

"If it gets out," Richard corrected, taking a step closer. "But it won't. By tomorrow morning, the feds will have a complete confession from Daniel. He’s weak, Claire. Under the pressure of a federal indictment, his lawyers will cut a deal, he'll plead guilty to save his family the embarrassment, and he'll serve ten years while I retire to an extradition-free villa in Montenegro."

"And what happens to us?" Lily asked, her voice surprisingly loud, stepping in front of me.

Richard looked down at his granddaughter with utter disgust. "You? You're the ungrateful brat who started this scene. You and your mother will unfortunately suffer a tragic car accident on the slippery roads home tonight. The grief will break Daniel completely, ensuring his swift confession. It ties up all the loose ends beautifully."

The guards took another step forward, their hands reaching into their jackets.

I felt a cold sweat break out on my neck. I looked at Lily. She wasn't shaking anymore. In fact, she looked almost... amused.

"Grandpa," Lily said, tilting her head. "You always said success should come with gratitude. But you forgot one thing about the next generation."

"And what's that?" Richard sneered, raising the gun.

"We don't use old-school ciphers. We use live streams."

Lily reached into her graduation gown pocket and pulled out her phone. The screen was glowing bright red.

"Say hello to the eighty guests from my graduation party," Lily said, turning the phone to face him. "And the four thousand other people currently watching this on Facebook Live, Instagram, and TikTok. I’ve been streaming since we entered the building."

Richard’s eyes went wide. He looked at the screen, where comments were scrolling past at lightning speed. “Is this real?” “Call the police!” “Oh my god, he has a gun!” “That’s the Halstead Foundation chairman!”

"You think a video saves you?" Richard roared, his face turning purple with rage. "I control the police chief! I control the media in this town!"

"Maybe you do," I spoke up, standing up from the chair and holding the leather notebook high. "But you don't control the international press. And you don't control the federal agents standing right behind you."

The elevator doors behind Richard chimed and slid open.

But it wasn't the FBI.

Stepping out of the elevator, flanked by two state troopers, was Patricia Halstead—Richard’s wife.

She wasn't wearing her elegant party dress. She was in a simple trench coat, her face pale but resolute. Behind her stood Agent Vance.

"Patricia?" Richard gasped, lowering the gun in sheer disbelief. "What are you doing here?"

Patricia looked at her husband of forty years with cold, unadulterated venom. "You told me the offshore account was for a mistress, Richard. You told me you were moving money to buy a house for some twenty-year-old girl in Europe. I could handle your infidelity, you pathetic old man. But human trafficking? Destroying our son's life? Framing our granddaughter?"

Patricia turned to Agent Vance. "He keeps the authorization codes in his watch. The digital decryption key is the serial number stamped on the inside of his Patek Philippe."

Richard stumbled backward, his gun dropping to the floor with a heavy thud as the state troopers tackled him to the ground, slamming his face into the Persian rug.

"You betrayed me!" Richard screamed into the carpet. "Patricia! I built this empire for us!"

"You built it for yourself," Patricia said coldly, walking over to Lily and pulling her into a tight, fierce embrace. "Congratulations on graduating, sweetheart. You really are the smartest Halstead."

Three days later, the charges against Daniel were dropped after the forensic audit proved he had been under the influence of fraudulent document signing. Richard was denied bail, facing fifty years of federal and international charges. The Halstead Foundation was seized by the state and liquidated, with every dime of its assets diverted to the victims of the South American clinics.

On Monday morning, Lily and I sat on the porch, drinking coffee in the quiet sunlight.

"So," I asked, looking at my daughter. "What are you going to do now that you don't have to work for the family foundation?"

Lily smiled, pulling a fresh acceptance letter from her bag. It was a full fellowship for a Master’s program in Forensic Data Analysis at Oxford.

"I think I'll stick to the family business, Mom," she smiled, clinking her coffee mug against mine. "Exposing monsters by their own numbers."
