Chapter 6 - THE FINAL AUDIT

Three weeks later, the sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the newly renamed Nexus Technologies penthouse suite on the fifty-third floor of the Boston Financial Tower.
The skyline stretched out below like a miniature circuit board, glittering under a crisp autumn sky.
Ethan stood by the glass, holding a porcelain mug of black coffee, watching the city move below him. The fallout from Charles Whitaker’s arrest had been cataclysmic: within forty-eight hours, the Whitaker holding trust had filed for emergency Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Board members had resigned en masse; shell companies had unraveled like cheap yarn under the scrutiny of federal prosecutors; and Charles was currently sitting in a federal holding facility, denied bail due to a severe flight risk.
Meredith had taken a modest settlement—enough to maintain a comfortable apartment in the suburbs, far away from high society—and signed away all custody rights to Lily without a single legal battle. She knew, with cold certainty, that fighting Ethan now would be like fighting a freight train with bare hands.
The office door clicked open.
Lily walked in, wearing a bright yellow cardigan instead of an oversized shield, carrying a small sketchpad under her arm. Her hazel eyes were bright, clear, and unburdened by the crushing weight of a legacy she had never asked to inherit.
“Dad?” she called out, her voice ringing clear across the minimalist office. “Can we go get ice cream now? You promised.”
Ethan turned, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his face—the first real smile he had felt in ten years. He set his coffee mug down on the mahogany desk, walking over to scoop his daughter up into his arms as she giggled, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.
“I always keep my promises, bug,” Ethan said, pressing a kiss to the top of her head as he adjusted her yellow cardigan. “Double scoops. Whatever flavor you want.”
“Even mint chocolate chip with extra sprinkles?”
May you like
“Especially mint chocolate chip.”
As they walked out of the penthouse together, leaving the shadow of the Whitaker empire far behind them, the heavy glass doors closed behind them with a soft, satisfying click.
