Chapter 8 - THE NEW FOUNDATION

The sun dipped below the Boston harbor, casting long, bruised shadows across the water as Ethan stood on the private balcony of his penthouse.

The city lights flickered on one by one, a vast, glittering grid of human ambition and digital pulse. Down on the street, tiny yellow cabs cut through the evening traffic like sparks on a circuit board.

Inside, the soft sound of laughter drifted from the living room where Lily was sprawled across the rug, happily coloring in a new sketchbook with a box of Crayola markers—no velvet bows, no rigid posture, just a normal, carefree eight-year-old child enjoying her evening.

Ethan took a slow sip of scotch, letting the amber liquid burn his throat. He felt lighter than he had in a decade. The Whitaker name was dust. Charles was rotting in a federal cell. Meredith was gone. The company was his, fully and unconditionally.

His phone buzzed on the glass railing.

It wasn't a push notification from the federal server. It was an incoming text message from an unknown, untraceable overseas IP address.

Ethan stared down at the screen. The screen illuminated his face in the gathering dusk.

There was no phone number attached. Just a single line of text:

“Nice work taking down the old man, little brother. Now... when are you going to return my shares?”

Ethan’s hand froze around the crystal glass. A slow, terrifying realization washed over him, completely overriding the warmth of his victory. The glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the concrete balcony floor as the shadows lengthened across the Boston skyline.
