Chapter 2 - The Ground Crumbles

Viral Hook: The moment the plane landed, his mistress realized she wasn't his partner in crime—she was his bait.
The descent back into O'Hare was the longest ninety minutes of Mark Bennett’s life. Beside him, Vanessa was growing frantic.
"Mark, what is happening?" she hissed, clutching his arm, her perfect manicure digging into his skin. "My wire transfer to the Zurich leasing office bounced. And I just got an alert that my personal credit cards have been declined!"
"Shut up, Vanessa," Mark growled, his polite, charming facade completely disintegrating. "Let me think."
He was trapped in a metal tube at thirty thousand feet, completely blind. The $42 million was gone. His personal accounts were wiped clean. How? Who could have gotten to his offshore accounts? The security protocols on Aegis Holdings were military-grade. Only he and his CFO had the keys—and his CFO was currently bound to a non-disclosure agreement and a heavy bribe.
Then, a sickening realization began to take root in his mind.
Claire.
No. It was impossible. Claire was a housewife who spent her afternoons organizing spice racks and volunteering at the local animal shelter. She hadn't touched a ledger in a decade. When he had forced her to resign from her "cute little detective job" at the Attorney General's office, she had wept, apologized, and submitted to his will. She didn't have the spine for this.
Yet, as the tires of the Boeing 777 slammed onto the wet tarmac of O'Hare, the dread in his chest solidified into icy certainty.
The plane taxied not to the international terminal, but to a secluded hanger on the far side of the airfield. As soon as the aircraft came to a halt, the cabin doors were opened from the outside.
Two men in dark windbreakers with FBI stenciled in bold yellow letters across the back stepped into the first-class cabin. Beside them was David Vance.
"Mark Bennett," Vance said, his voice echoing in the quiet cabin. "Stand up, hands behind your back."
Vanessa screamed, instantly pulling her hands away from Mark as if his skin were toxic. "What is this? I have nothing to do with this! I am a passenger! I am his business associate!"
"Save it, Ms. Cole," Vance replied calmly. "Your first-class ticket was purchased with embezzled corporate funds, and that diamond bracelet on your wrist is currently listed as stolen property in a police report filed twelve hours ago."
"Stolen?" Vanessa gasped, looking at Mark with pure betrayal. "Mark, you said you bought this for me!"
Mark didn't look at her. His eyes were fixed on the terminal windows in the distance.
As the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, the heavy weight of reality crushed him. He was led down the stairs of the mobile boarding ramp into the freezing Chicago wind. Standing at the bottom of the stairs, flanked by two federal prosecutors and her personal attorney, was Claire.
She wasn't wearing the oversized, faded cardigan he had grown to despise. She wore a tailored emerald-green trench coat, her hair styled perfectly, her eyes sharp, cold, and entirely devoid of tears.
"Claire!" Mark yelled, struggling against the agents holding him. "Claire, what did you do? You don't understand! This is a mistake! Explain to them!"
Claire walked up to him, stopping just inches away. She looked at his wrists, bound in steel, and then up at his panicked, desperate face.
"There is no mistake, Mark," she said, her voice incredibly calm, incredibly steady. "I personally signed the forensic affidavit that authorized the emergency freeze on your assets. Every wire transfer, every shell company, every encrypted email you sent Vanessa from our home network—I handed it all to the grand jury."

Mark stared at her, his mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for air. "You... you knew?"
"I've known for six months," Claire whispered, leaning in so only he could hear. "And while you were planning your escape, I was planning your execution."
