Chapter 3 - The Reconstruction

Viral Hook: "My husband called me his 'cute little detective.' Now, I'm the lead investigator on his federal indictment."

Inside the interrogation room of the Dirksen Federal Courthouse, the air was stale and smelled of burnt coffee. Mark sat with his high-priced corporate defense attorney, Arthur Pendelton, who looked grayer and more defeated by the minute.

"They have everything, Mark," Pendelton muttered, throwing a thick binder onto the metal table. "The paper trail is flawless. They didn't just stumble onto your offshore accounts; they had the exact routing numbers, the IP addresses of the transactions, and signed affidavits from your 'silent' partners in Zurich who flipped on you the moment the Swiss authorities froze the assets."

"Who gave them that information?" Mark hissed, slamming his palms on the table. "My security was airtight!"

The door to the interrogation room opened, and Claire walked in. She wasn't holding a purse; she was holding a government-issued tablet. Behind her came the lead prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Vance.

"Actually, Mark, your security was pathetic," Claire said, taking a seat opposite him.

"Claire, you can't be in here!" Mark yelled, pointing a finger at her. "Conflict of interest! Arthur, do something!"

"There is no conflict, Mr. Bennett," Marcus Vance intervened. "Mrs. Bennett is not acting as an active-duty federal agent. However, as the primary whistleblower and the certified forensic accountant who uncovered the initial fraud, she is acting as our chief consultant under the Justice Department's Special Asset Recovery program."

Claire smiled, a cold, clinical expression that made Mark’s blood run cold. She tapped her tablet, projecting a complex flow chart onto the digital whiteboard on the wall.

"Let’s walk down memory lane, shall we?" Claire said, her voice commanding the room. "In 2021, you started restructuring Bennett Logistics. You claimed it was to facilitate 'global expansion.' In reality, you were inflating your logistics invoices by 400%, routing the excess cash through a shell company called Vanguard Trans-Global, and then using those funds to buy real estate in Vanessa Cole's name."

"You have no proof of that," Mark lied, his voice cracking.

"I have the metadata from the scanned deeds, Mark. You used our home scanner," Claire replied smoothly. "But the real masterpiece was Aegis Holdings. You thought that by routing the $42 million through three different European banks before hitting Zurich, you’d wash it clean. But you made one critical mistake."

Mark glared at her, his jaw clenched.

"You used my maiden name, Claire Sterling, as the security answer for the master recovery key on your encrypted drive," Claire said, leaning forward. "You thought it was a joke. You thought I was so stupid, so oblivious, that using my name as the lock to your stolen fortune was a poetic touch. But a forensic accountant always checks the master recovery keys first."

Mark felt the air leave his lungs. He looked at his attorney, but Pendelton just shook his head and looked down at the floor.

"You're facing twenty years for wire fraud, fifteen years for money laundering, and an additional ten for tax evasion," Claire said, shutting her tablet with a sharp snap. "And because all of this was funded using marital assets, the divorce court has already awarded me temporary receiver status over Bennett Logistics. You don't own a company anymore, Mark. I do."

"You think you've won?" Mark sneered, desperation turning into venom. "Without me, that company is nothing! It will collapse in a week! You'll be left with a bankrupt husk!"

"We'll see about that," Claire said. "Oh, and by the way, Vanessa just agreed to a plea deal. She’s testifying against you in exchange for immunity. She gave up your secret safe deposit box in O'Hare's long-term parking locker. The one containing the physical bearer bonds."

Mark’s face drained of what little color it had left. He reached across the table, trying to grab Claire, but the guards instantly pinned him to his chair.

"Enjoy the cell, Mark," Claire said as she stood up. "I hear the lighting is terrible for your complexion."
