Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last Strike

Viral Hook: "My ex-husband thought his mistress was his last loyal ally. He forgot that a snake will always bite the hand that feeds it."

The trial of the United States v. Mark Bennett was the most publicized financial thriller of the year. The media labeled it the "Forensic Wife Case." Every day, cameras captured Claire entering the federal courthouse in stunning, professional attire, looking every bit the victor of a war Mark had started.

But Mark was not going down without a fight.

From his cell, using a contraband phone smuggled in by a corrupt guard, he had orchestrated one final, desperate play. He had contacted a local fixer—a man named Viktor Petrov—using the last of his hidden, physical cash reserves that Claire hadn't been able to freeze.

His instructions were simple: Eliminate the chief witness.

But Mark, in his desperate arrogance, had miscalculated who the chief witness actually was. He assumed it was Vanessa Cole. He believed that if Vanessa was silenced, the prosecution’s case would crumble into circumstantial dust.

On the eve of her testimony, Vanessa was hiding out in a secure safehouse in downtown Chicago, under federal protection.

At 11:00 PM, the power to the safehouse went completely black.

Vanessa, panicking, reached for her phone, but the signal jammer in the courtyard had already killed her cellular reception. She heard the soft, metallic scrape of the kitchen window sliding open.

A shadow slipped into the apartment, a suppressed pistol drawn.

"Please!" Vanessa sobbed, backing into the corner of her bedroom. "Please, don't! Mark sent you, didn't he? I won't testify! I'll run! I'll leave the country!"

The assassin didn't speak. He stepped into the moonlight filtering through the blinds, raising the weapon.

Suddenly, the closet door swung open. Two federal marshals, their weapons drawn, stepped into the room.

"Drop the weapon! Federal agents!"

Before the assassin could react, he was tackled to the floor, disarmed, and cuffed.

The lights in the safehouse flickered back on.

Claire stepped out from the hallway, flanked by Agent David Vance. She looked down at the assassin, then turned her gaze to Vanessa, who was shaking violently on the floor.

"You... you knew?" Vanessa gasped, looking at Claire in horror and confusion. "How did you know they were coming?"

"Because I've been monitoring Mark's contraband phone since the day he bought it," Claire said, holding up a printout of the encrypted messages between Mark and the fixer. "I let him hire the assassin, Vanessa. I let him transfer the cash to the fixer's account—an account we had already flagged and traced."

Vanessa stared at Claire, realization dawning on her. "You used me... as bait."

"You wore my stolen diamond bracelet, Vanessa," Claire said, her voice hard and uncompromising. "You helped my husband attempt to steal my life and my future. You’re lucky I let the marshals intervene. Now, you have a choice. You can go to prison as his co-conspirator in an attempted murder-for-hire plot, or you can get on that stand tomorrow and put the final nail in his coffin."

Vanessa, weeping, nodded frantically. "I'll do whatever you want. I'll tell them everything."

Claire turned and walked out of the safehouse, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor.

The trap was fully closed.
