Chapter 8 - THE SHIFT IN POWERBefore Ricky could utter another lie, Damian gave a short signal to his lead enforcer.

"Take him out of my city," Damian ordered coldly. "Ensure he never sets foot in New York again—and make sure the police receive the original records of his waterfront activities."

Ricky shrieked and begged for mercy as they dragged him out through the rear exit—the very alley where he had tried to destroy me three hours earlier.

The quiet that settled over Coda was absolute.

Damian turned back to face me, taking a slow step forward. For the first time, I saw genuine regret in the eyes of the man the entire city feared.

"I trusted reports instead of looking at the people suffering beneath them," Damian said softly. "That failure was mine, Maya. And I am sorry."

"What happens to me now?" I asked, my voice barely audible over the hum of the club's generators. "Do I go back to scrubbing floors?"

Damian smiled—a faint, rare expression that completely transformed his dark features into something breathtaking.

"No," Damian replied. "Starting tomorrow, you are the general floor supervisor of Coda. You know how this club operates, you know how the staff should be treated, and you have something money can't buy: absolute honesty."
