Chapter 10 - THE FINAL STROKEBack in the art studio attached to the Vermont farmhouse, the late afternoon sun cast long, golden rays across the wooden floorboards.

An oversized canvas sat resting on a sturdy oak easel in the center of the room.

The painting was unlike anything Arthur had ever created before. It wasn't a landscape of the Vermont hills, nor was it an abstract expression of hidden wealth or corporate ruin.

It was a simple, powerful portrait of two children running hand-in-hand across an open, sunlit meadow, their silhouettes framed against a brilliant, breaking dawn. In the background, casting a protective, steady shadow over them, stood the faint outline of a lone figure with arms outstretched—not as a cage, but as a shield.

Arthur walked slowly into the studio, wiping his hands on a rag, and stood before the canvas.

He looked at it for a long, quiet moment, evaluating the brushstrokes, the balance of light and dark, the raw emotion bleeding through the colors.

He reached out, picked up a fine-tipped brush dipped in warm gold paint, and added one final detail in the lower right corner: a small, subtle signature—A.V.—followed by the infinity symbol.

He stepped back, exhaling a long, slow breath that felt like the final release of every ghost from his past.

The door creaked open behind him. Maya and Leo poked their heads into the studio, smelling faintly of campfire smoke and roasted marshmallows.

"Dinner's ready!" Maya announced with a grin. "And if you don't come right now, Leo says he's going to eat all your share of the apple pie."

"Hey! That was a secret plan!" Leo protested, running into the room and grabbing Arthur’s hand. "Come on, Arthur! Hurry up!"

Arthur smiled down at the two children, dropping his paintbrush into a jar of turpentine on the worktable. He didn't look back at the canvas one last time. He didn't need to. The story was already told, the chapter was closed, and the canvas of his life was finally filled with light.

"Lead the way," Arthur said, squeezing Leo's hand tightly.

As the three of them walked out into the warm, golden evening together, the studio door clicked softly shut behind them, sealing away the past forever, and opening the door to a future that could never be taken away again.
