Chapter 4 - UNMASKING THE GHOSTThe art gallery in downtown Manhattan was usually a sanctuary of quiet luxury, filled with wealthy patrons sipping champagne and whispering appreciatively over abstract canvases.

Today, it looked like a crime scene.

Two high-ranking executives from Sterling Enterprises burst through the glass double doors, panting heavily. They spotted the gallery owner, a timid middle-aged man named Julian, frantically packing paintings into bubble wrap.

"Stop right there!" one of the executives yelled, flashing a corporate badge. "Where is Arthur Vance? We demand to speak with him immediately!"

Julian stopped packing, looked up over his designer reading glasses, and let out a dry, nervous laugh. "Arthur? You’re looking for Arthur?"

"Yes! Where is he hiding?" the second executive demanded, stepping forward. "Tell him Jonathan Sterling wants a word before we utterly destroy his life!"

Julian slowly lowered the painting he was holding, rested it against a mahogany table, and stared at the two corporate thugs as if they had just announced they were from another planet.

"Destroy his life?" Julian repeated, his voice dripping with ironic disbelief. "Gentlemen, let me educate you on a few things. You think Arthur is just some starving artist who got lucky marrying into your little dynasty, don’t you?"

The executives exchanged uneasy glances. "He’s a nobody painter who lives off his wife’s allowance."

"An allowance," Julian snorted, shaking his head. "Oh, that’s rich. Do you know who owns this gallery building? Arthur does. Do you know who owns the land under the Sterling Group corporate headquarters?"

The executives froze.

"Arthur bought it three years ago through a shell company just to keep it out of foreclosure," Julian continued, walking slowly toward them. "Do you know why he paints landscapes and abstract art in that little studio? Because he likes it. It’s a hobby. A coping mechanism for a man who spent ten years building the most ruthless private equity empire in the Western hemisphere before stepping down as CEO."

The color drained entirely from the younger executive's face. "Wait... V-990... You don't mean..."

"Arthur Vance," Julian said softly, "is the sole founder and majority shareholder of Vanguard Capital. The very entity that just liquidated four hundred million dollars of your company's portfolio before breakfast."

The gallery went dead silent. The heavy truth hung in the air like a physical blow.

"He didn't marry Victoria for her money," Julian added with a cold smile. "She married his shadow. And now, the sun is coming up."
