Chapter 1 - The Face in the Shadows

It was Eleanor Vance—Tyler’s mother.
She stood in my driveway, elegant, impeccably tailored, holding my daughter’s phone and spare key fob with standard leather driving gloves. Her face held no panic, no hesitation, only a cold, methodical precision as she looked down at the unconscious body of her daughter-in-law and her three-week-old granddaughter roasting in the enclosed metal casket.
"Keep the baby inside," Eleanor’s voice played through the high-fidelity speaker, crisp and detached. "It makes her breakdown seem believable. A court won't question post-partum psychosis if the infant is endangered."
Beside me, Tyler looked as if he had been struck by lightning. His arrogant posture collapsed, his shoulders hunching as his gaze darted desperately toward his attorney. Beside him, Vanessa took a sharp step back, put her hands over her mouth, and let out a strangled sob, realizing in an instant that her dirty little affair had landed her in the middle of a double attempted murder investigation.
Detective Miller didn't hesitate. He unholstered his handcuffs with a metallic click that shattered the quiet room. "Tyler Vance, Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and child endangerment. You have the right to remain silent..."
"Wait!" Tyler panicked, backing toward the office door. "That video is altered! It’s deepfaked! My late father-in-law was obsessed with tech, Diane hates me, she fabricated this!"
"The hard drive is encrypted and timestamped on a local secure server, Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said coldly, clapping the steel cuffs around Tyler’s wrists. "Save it for the judge."
As officers dragged Tyler and a hysterical Vanessa toward the waiting patrol cars, Detective Miller turned to me, his jaw set tight. "We’re putting an APB out on your mother-in-law right now, Mrs. Diane. But you need to understand something—if Eleanor was willing to orchestrate this level of cold-blooded staging, your daughter wasn't just targeted because of a failing marriage. There’s something deeper here."

My hands trembled as I stared at the frozen image of Eleanor on the screen. My late husband had spent his life protecting our family, and even from beyond the grave, his hidden camera had pulled back the veil. But as the police sirens wailed into the distance, my mind raced to the hospital room where Rachel and little Lily lay defenseless.
I grabbed my coat and key ring. The war was far from over; it had only just begun.
