Chapter 7 - The Final Trap

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes—one of the fastest verdicts in state history.
When the court reconvened, the judge asked the defendants to stand.
"On count one, attempted first-degree murder, how do you find?"
"Guilty."
"On count two, conspiracy to commit murder, how do you find?"
"Guilty."
"On count three, felony child endangerment..."
"Guilty."
The verdicts read like a drumbeat of justice. Eleanor Vance was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Tyler Vance received thirty-five years for his role in the conspiracy and attempted murder, while Vanessa Sterling was sentenced to fifteen years for her financial complicity and drug procurement.
As the bailiffs led the three defendants away in chains, Tyler stopped near the gallery railing, looking at Rachel with tears streaming down his face.
"Rachel... please," he sobbed, his voice cracking. "I was forced into it by my mother! I still love you! Please don't take Lily away from me!"
Rachel stood up slowly, stepping toward him until she was only inches away from the security barrier. Her eyes were like steel, completely free of the fear that had once paralyzed her.
"You left your three-week-old daughter to die in a burning car for money, Tyler," Rachel said, her voice resonant and unshakeable. "You aren't a father. You aren't a husband. You are nothing to us."
She turned her back on him as the guards dragged him crying through the heavy double doors of the courtroom exit.
We walked out of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sunshine, surrounded by news reporters flashing cameras and asking questions. But we ignored the noise, stepping into the waiting car driven by our family attorney.
We thought the nightmare was finally over. We thought justice had been served completely.

We were wrong.
Because three days after the trial concluded, an unexpected package arrived at my front door, delivered by a private courier service from an offshore bank in Switzerland.
