Chapter 3 - The Shadow Dynasty

By midnight, the pieces of the puzzle began to assemble into a terrifying picture.
I sat in the hospital waiting room with Detective Miller while Rachel rested under heavy security. My late husband, Arthur, had been a brilliant software engineer who helped design infrastructure security systems for major financial firms. Before he died two years ago, he had established a blind trust for Rachel—a trust worth over forty million dollars, set to activate on her twenty-fifth birthday or upon the birth of her first child.
That birthday had passed last month. Lily was born three weeks ago.
Tyler had married my daughter not out of love, but under the instruction of his mother, Eleanor Vance. The Vance family logistics empire was secretly bankrupt, drowning in hundreds of millions of dollars in illegal debt, money laundering, and offshore fraud. Eleanor needed Arthur’s trust fund to bail out her crumbling empire.
"According to the trust terms," Detective Miller explained, reviewing documents brought in by our family attorney, "if Rachel dies without a named adult executor, the full management of the estate defaults to her spouse, Tyler. But if both Rachel and the child perish simultaneously in what appears to be an accident caused by Rachel’s own negligence or mental instability, Tyler inherits every single cent outright, completely free of judicial oversight."
"They set her up," I said, my voice trembling with disgust. "They spent months gaslighting her, making her look unstable to her friends and doctors, preparing the ground so that when they finally killed her, everyone would believe she took her own life and her baby's life in a fit of post-partum depression."
"And Vanessa was the numbers person who set up the shell companies to receive the stolen trust funds the moment Rachel was pronounced dead," Miller added.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the hard plastic table. It was an unknown number. I pressed answer and put it on speaker so Detective Miller could listen.
"Diane," a cold, refined voice echoed through the line. It was Eleanor Vance.
"Where are you, Eleanor?" I demanded, my knuckles white as I gripped the phone. "The police have a warrant for your arrest."
A low, haunting chuckle came from the speaker. "Warrants mean very little to people with my resources, Diane. You think you’ve won because you shattered a piece of glass and found a security video? You’ve only pushed us into a corner. And a mother protecting her family legacy is a very dangerous creature."
"You tried to murder my daughter and my baby granddaughter!" I screamed.

"I did what was necessary to protect what belongs to the Vance family," Eleanor replied without a shred of remorse. "Your husband’s wealth was built on back-office codes that belonged to my late husband's firm years ago. Arthur stole from us first. We were simply taking back our birthright. Tell Rachel that if she speaks another word to the prosecutor, the photos we took of her under the influence will be released to every media outlet in the country. She will be remembered as a monster who tried to bake her child."
The line went dead.
