Chapter 1 - The Revelation in the Floorboards

The funeral was over. The silence in the house was absolute, broken only by the grandfather clock ticking away the seconds of a marriage that had already died. I didn’t cry. The thirty unanswered calls had frozen my tears into ice.

Holding the tiny silver key Evelyn had placed in my palm, I walked up the stairs to her bedroom. Julian had never allowed his mother to remodel this room, claiming it was a waste of money. But now, standing alone in the shadowed space, I looked closely at the antique mahogany wardrobe in the corner.

Using the key, I unlocked a hidden compartment beneath the bottom drawer. Inside lay a velvet box, dust-free and heavy.

I popped the clasp. My breath hitched.

It wasn't just old family heirlooms. It was a thick stack of legal documents, private detective reports, financial statements, and a handwritten ledger. Evelyn hadn't just suspected Julian of betraying me—she had spent the last two years documenting his double life.

The financial statements showed millions funneled offshore into accounts under a woman’s name: Chloe Vance. The detective reports detailed Julian’s secret penthouse in downtown Manhattan, his fake business trips, and—most chillingly—transfer papers proving that Julian had been systematically draining his mother’s estate behind her back, forging her signature while she was too weak to protest.

Evelyn had known. She had been waiting for the right moment to expose him, or perhaps waiting for me to be strong enough to finish what she started.

As I closed the box, my phone lit up on the nightstand. It was a text message from Julian:

May you like

"Deal's closed, babe. Heading back tomorrow. Try to look happy for once when I walk through that door. Mom still giving you trouble?"

I stared at the screen, a cold, sharp smile touching my lips. Oh, Julian, I thought. Your mother isn't giving me trouble anymore. But I am about to give you hell.
