Chapter 4 - The Grand Gala and the Golden Noose

The Grand Plaza ballroom was a sea of glittering chandeliers, clinking crystal flutes, and wealthy elites draped in designer gowns. At the center of the stage stood Julian, glowing with arrogant pride as he clinked his champagne glass, wrapping up his speech for the multi-million-dollar Vanguard merger.
"And to my wonderful wife, Clarissa, who has stood by my side through thick and thin..." Julian beamed, scanning the crowd for me. "This victory is for us."
Polite applause rippled through the ballroom. Julian smiled, stepping down from the stage, expecting to bask in the adoration of his peers.
Instead, the lights in the grand ballroom suddenly flickered and died, save for a single, blinding spotlight aimed directly at the massive LED screen behind the stage.
Murmurs of confusion swept through the crowd.
On the screen, the corporate presentation vanished. In its place appeared a high-resolution, crystal-clear photograph of Julian lounging on a Hawaiian beach, laughing with a woman half his age, cocktails in hand.
Gasps echoed through the room. Julian’s face turned the color of ash. He dropped his champagne flute, the glass shattering loudly against the marble floor.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Julian shouted, lunging toward the audio-visual booth. "Turn that off! It's a hack! Deepfake!"
"It’s not a deepfake, Julian," my voice echoed smoothly through the premium surround-sound speakers.
I stepped onto the stage, bathed in the spotlight, wearing my black suit like a suit of armor. The crowd fell dead silent, staring at me in shock.
"Ladies and gentlemen," I spoke into the microphone, my voice ringing clear and steady across the massive hall. "My husband claims to be a visionary businessman. But over the last forty-eight hours, while I was burying his mother alone because he was too busy vacationing with his mistress, I discovered something fascinating."
Julian sprinted toward the stage, his face twisted in rage, his eyes wild. "Clarissa! Stop this right now or I swear to God—"
"Security, please escort my soon-to-be-ex-husband back to his seat," I said calmly.
Before Julian could take another step, two massive security guards grabbed him by the shoulders, pinning him in place.
"On that screen," I continued, pointing backward as a new document appeared, "you will see federal wire transfers, offshore bank accounts, and forged signatures. Julian Vance didn't just betray his marriage vows. He systematically embezzled millions from his own dying mother, forging her signature while she was on life support."

The ballroom erupted into sheer chaos. Whispers, gasps, and camera flashes exploded from every corner. Vanguard executives were already furiously tapping on their tablets, their faces turning grim.
Julian stopped struggling. He looked at me, his eyes wide with a horrifying realization. He wasn't just losing a wife; he was losing everything.
