Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT ALLIANCEBy 3:00 AM, the rain had cleared, leaving behind a slick, reflective blanket of fog that clung to the asphalt of downtown Seattle. I drove straight to a nondescript brick building tucked away in an industrial alley near the harbor. A solitary amber light burned above a heavy steel door bearing a faded brass plaque: Reed & Associates Legal Consultants.

When I pulled up, a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal overcoat was waiting under the awning. Harrison Reed. He looked exactly like his profile picture—sharp jawline, silver-streaked hair at his temples, and eyes that missed nothing.
He opened my car door before I even unbuckled my seatbelt.
"Mrs. Vance," Reed said, his voice deep and measured. "You are taking an extraordinary risk being here. Let me see the drive."
I didn't flinch. I slowly unzipped my coat, reached into the hidden lining, and pulled out the dark titanium drive, placing it gently into his outstretched palm.
Reed’s eyes widened slightly as the faint blue LED light on the device flickered to life upon sensing his skin contact. He pulled out a specialized diagnostic reader from his briefcase, plugging the drive into a ruggedized portable terminal. A string of complex cryptographic code scrolled rapidly across the screen.
"My God," Reed breathed, adjusting his glasses. "This isn't just the primary ledger of the Vance Group's offshore tax shelters. This is the master decryption key to the entire corporate governance vault. Every illegal asset transfer, every shell company Evelyn and Chad set up to bleed Marcus dry over the last decade... it's all here, timestamped and immutably locked."
"Can they hack it?" I asked, my voice steady.
"Not in a million years," Reed replied, looking up at me with a newfound respect. "Marcus built this encryption architecture himself while he was chief technology officer at DARPA before taking over the family firm. Without the biometric override—which requires your fingerprint and a voice phrase—this drive will automatically self-destruct and wipe the cloud nodes if anyone attempts a brute-force entry."
I stared down at the small piece of metal. Marcus, you brilliant, paranoid genius.
"What are our next steps, Mr. Reed?" I asked, leaning forward. "They think they've won. They think they can squeeze out the board, sell off the company assets, and leave me destitute."
Reed closed his laptop with a sharp snap. "They are holding an emergency corporate summit in five days to officially ratify Chad as the new Chief Executive Officer and strip your late husband's estate of all remaining voting shares. If they succeed, they will liquidate everything and flee to the Cayman Islands."

A cold, fierce smile touched the corners of my lips. "Then I suppose we crashing their party."
Reed nodded slowly, a matching grin breaking through his stern facade. "I’ll handle the federal subpeonas and coordinate with the SEC's white-collar crime division. All you need to do, Harper, is stay invisible until D-Day. When you walk into that boardroom, you won't just be reclaiming your husband's legacy—you'll be walking in to arrest them."
