Chapter 3 - THE WOLF IN EXPENSIVE CLOTHESThe next four days passed in a blur of coded phone calls, secure safehouses, and meticulous preparation. Harrison Reed transformed me from a grieving widow into a force of nature. Out went the faded jeans and oversized sweaters; in came a bespoke, razor-sharp midnight-blue Armani pantsuit, paired with custom heels and a diamond-accented watch that Marcus had gifted me on our first wedding anniversary.

Meanwhile, across the city, the Vance family was riding high on their perceived triumph.
According to Reed’s digital wiretaps and public financial trackers, Evelyn and Chad were moving at breakneck speed. They had already listed Marcus’s downtown penthouse for sale, shipped his classic car collection to an auction house in Dubai, and scheduled the grand Vance Group Global Summit for Friday morning at the company’s monolith headquarters downtown.
On Thursday evening, I stood before the full-length mirror in our safehouse loft, adjusting the cuffs of my jacket. I caught my reflection. The bruised, tear-streaked girl shivering in the rain was completely gone. In her place was Harper Vance—cold, composed, and absolutely lethal.
"Are you ready?" Reed asked, walking into the room carrying a sleek leather folder containing the final federal indictments.
"Born ready," I replied, slipping the titanium drive into my pocket like a loaded weapon.
Friday morning arrived with a biting chill. The sky over Seattle was a sheet of heavy, bruised gray, matching the industrial concrete facade of the Vance Tower.
At 9:45 AM, black luxury sedans lined up outside the grand marble entrance of the corporate headquarters. Shareholders, board members, media outlets, and high-society elites flooded the lobby, all buzzing with anticipation for the coronation of Chad Vance as the new supreme ruler of the empire.
Up on the 50th floor, inside the ultra-exclusive panoramic boardroom, Evelyn Vance sat at the head of the long obsidian conference table. She wore a pristine white Chanel suit, her diamond brooch flashing brilliantly under the recessed lighting. Beside her, Chad sat puffing his chest out, practicing his executive smirk while whispering instructions to his corporate sycophants.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Chad announced, standing up as the clock struck 10:00 AM, tapping his microphone for attention. "Before we officially vote to ratify the restructuring of our executive board and finalize the consolidation of my late brother's estate, I’d like to thank my mother for her unwavering strength during this difficult transition."
Polite, sycophantic applause rippled through the room. Evelyn nodded regally, dabbing a dry corner of her eye with a silk handkerchief for dramatic effect.
"As you all know," Chad continued, puffing up further, "Marcus was a visionary, but his personal affairs were... erratic. Fortunately, our family has successfully secured the foundational assets, and we are ready to lead the Vance Group into a golden era of—"
Clang.
The massive double oak doors at the back of the boardroom didn't just open—they swung wide open with a sharp, echoing crash that cut Chad off mid-sentence.

Every head in the room whipped around.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the morning light, was me.
