Chapter 3 - The Scars Beneath the ClothesThe flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers painted the living room ceiling in an erratic, pulsing rhythm. Heavy pounding echoed against the grand double front doors, followed by a firm, authoritative voice shouting, "Federal Marshals! Open up!"

Jonathan froze, his hand hovering mid-air as he stared at the front door in absolute disbelief. The illusion of his untouchable suburban life was crumbling into dust around him, second by second.
"You didn't," Jonathan whispered, his voice cracking with a pathetic edge of panic. "Audrey, you can't involve federal marshals in a family dispute. We have a child! Think of Micah!"
"I am thinking of Micah," Audrey said, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed fury as she continued to kneel on the floor just inches from the edge of the coffee table.
She kept her movements slow, deliberate, non-threatening. She remembered her child psychology training from her undergraduate days before she climbed the corporate ladder—traumatized children needed absolute predictability and zero sudden movements.
"Micah, honey?" Audrey murmured, stretching her hand out palm-up on the rug, well within his line of sight, but not forcing him to touch her. "Can you see Mommy's hand? Remember this ring? You used to call it the 'sparkle mountain' when we played in the garden."
Slowly, almost imperceptibly, a small, dirt-smudged eye peeked out from beneath the dark mahogany drape of the coffee table.
Micah’s gaze locked onto the silver diamond band on Audrey's ring finger. His lower lip quivered. A tiny, choked sob escaped his throat, sounding far too small and frail for a four-year-old boy.
"Mom... mom?" the boy whispered, the word sounding foreign on his tongue, as if he hadn't been allowed to speak it in months.
"I'm here, baby. I'm right here," Audrey breathed, her chest aching as if she were being squeezed by a hydraulic press. "Can you crawl out to Mommy? Just a little bit. Take your time. I'm not going anywhere."
Before the boy could move, Eleanor stood up, her face twisted in a mask of bitter, unrepentant malice. She stepped toward the coffee table with her heavy leather-soled shoes, her voice snapping like a whip. "Stop coddling the brat, Audrey! He’s been acting like a feral animal ever since you walked out on this family. Clara has been trying to civilize him, but he’s hopeless—just like his mother, weak, emotional, and completely unfit—"
Crack.
The sound was shockingly loud in the tense room.
Audrey hadn't even stood up. With blinding speed, she had swept her hand out, catching Eleanor’s ankle with a sharp, calculated yank. The older woman lost her balance instantly, letting out a squawk of pure shock as she crashed hard onto her hands and knees against the hardwood floor, right beside the pool of spilled red wine.
Clara shrieked, jumping back as the red liquid splattered against the hem of her designer skirt.
"If you ever—ever—speak to my son, or about my son, in that tone of voice again," Audrey said, standing up slowly now, towering over her mother-in-law with a terrifying, glacial intensity, "I will ensure that every single penny of the trust fund your late husband left you is seized as restitution for the corporate embezzlement scheme you helped orchestrate."
Eleanor sputtered, her face turning a deep, congested purple as she tried to scramble backward. "You—you assaulted me! Jonathan, your wife is a lunatic! Call the guards! Have her thrown out!"
Jonathan didn't move. He couldn't. The front door had just burst open with a resounding crash as two federal marshals, flanked by local police officers, flooded into the grand foyer.
"Audrey Vance?" the lead marshal called out, his hand resting casually on the holster of his service weapon as he scanned the chaotic scene.
"Here," Audrey said clearly, never taking her eyes off her shaking, terrified son still huddled beneath the table. She reached down, gently pulling the edge of the coffee table up just enough to create space, and slid her arms under Micah’s small, rigid body.
She lifted him into her arms, pulling him tightly against her chest.
Micah buried his face into the crook of her neck, his little hands clutching the collar of her blazer so hard his fingers turned white. He didn't say another word, but his whole body shook with a deep, wracking tremor that made Audrey's eyes burn with unshed tears.
"Mr. Jonathan Vance?" the marshal asked, turning his gaze toward the pale, sweating man standing by the dining table. "And Ms. Clara Vance?"
May you like
"I'm Clara Vance—well, Clara Vance in practice," Clara stammered, stepping forward with her most practiced, persuasive smile, trying to deploy her PR charm even now. "There’s been a terrible misunderstanding. This is a domestic dispute, officers. My attorney is—"
"Your attorney’s office was raided twenty minutes ago, Ms. Vance," the marshal interrupted smoothly, pulling a set of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "You are both being placed under arrest on federal charges of wire fraud, securities manipulation, corporate identity theft, and money laundering. And Ms. Eleanor Vance—please remain on the floor, ma'am, you are also being detained as a co-conspirator in the concealment of illicit assets."
