Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesThe chaos in the grand foyer was absolute.

Flashlights cut through the dim interior as forensic accountants and local investigators swarmed the property, snapping photos of documents left out on the mahogany desk, boxing up laptops, tablets, and corporate ledgers. Eleanor was helped—rather roughly—to her feet by a female officer, her face grey with shock as she was read her Miranda rights.
Jonathan stood motionless as the cold steel cuffs clicked around his wrists. He didn't fight back; the sheer scale of the ambush had completely broken his spirit. As they led him past Audrey, who stood near the grand staircase cradling Micah tightly against her shoulder, Jonathan turned his head, his eyes wide with a desperate, pleading vacancy.
"Audrey... please," he muttered, his voice cracking. "We have a history. Seven years. Think of what this does to our social standing, to the family name. We can settle this quietly. Drop the federal charges, and I'll sign over the house, the cars, everything. Just... don't do this."
Audrey didn't even look down at him. Her gaze was fixed straight ahead, her fingers rhythmically stroking the back of her son’s head to calm his trembling.
"You didn't think of Micah's safety when you brought another woman into our home and let your mother starve his spirit," Audrey said, her voice chillingly calm. "You didn't think of our history when you forged my signature on the asset transfer documents while I was flying across oceans to save your failing company from bankruptcy. The only thing you're going to be building for the next ten years, Jonathan, is license plates."
"Take him away," the marshal instructed, nudging Jonathan forward toward the open front door where the flashing red lights painted the night sky in blood-red strokes.
Clara wept openly now, her mascara running down her cheeks in dark, smudged streaks as two officers escorted her past the shattered wine glass on the floor. "This isn't the end of this, Audrey!" she screamed over her shoulder, her voice shrill with hysteria. "The board still loves me! The investors will back me! You can't destroy Vance Enterprises without destroying yourself!"
"Vance Enterprises died the day you walked into my house," Audrey replied softly, though neither Clara nor Jonathan heard her over the wail of the departing sirens.
Within twenty minutes, the house grew dead silent again—a heavy, suffocating silence that felt entirely different from the oppressive tension of earlier. The investigators had cleared out to the perimeter, leaving Audrey alone in the expansive, brilliantly lit foyer with her son.
Micah’s breathing had slowed down slightly, but he still refused to let go of her collar.
"Can we go home now, Mommy?" the boy whispered into her shoulder, his voice so quiet Audrey almost missed it.
Her heart broke all over again. Go home. This house—once their sanctuary—was now a crime scene, a monument to betrayal and cruelty.
"We're going to a real home, baby," Audrey promised fiercely, kissing the top of his soft, unwashed curls. "A place where no one ever yells, where there’s no locked doors, and where you can run as fast as you want."
She carried him out through the front doors, stepping past the yellow police tape fluttering in the night breeze. A sleek, black town car was idling at the curb, its rear door held open by Marcus, who stood waiting with a quiet, respectful nod.
As Audrey slid into the leather backseat with Micah securely in her arms, Marcus closed the door smoothly and slipped into the front passenger seat.
"Where to, Ms. Vance?" Marcus asked, turning around with a tablet displaying a secure logistical map.

"The penthouse in Manhattan," Audrey said, her eyes narrowing as she looked out the tinted window at the sprawling estate receding into the distance. "And Marcus? Send the second round of documents to the press."
Marcus smiled—a sharp, wolfish grin that mirrored Audrey's own. "Already scheduled for 6:00 AM, Audrey. By breakfast, the front page of The Wall Street Journal will feature Jonathan and Clara under the headline: The House of Cards: How Vance Enterprises Plundered Its Own Savior."
