Chapter 8 - The Ashes of an EmpireThe sound of the gavel falling felt like the final stroke of a executioner's axe.

Clara let out a sharp, choked gasp, burying her face in her hands as the bailiff stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists. Jonathan didn't even try to stand up; he slumped forward, resting his forehead against the cold mahogany surface of the defense table, his shoulders shaking with silent, impotent rage.
In the gallery, Eleanor let out a shrill scream of denial, lunging toward the aisle before two court officers firmly pinned her arms behind her back and hauled her out of the courtroom.
Audrey didn't watch them leave.
She stood up smoothly, buttoning her jacket with calm, measured precision. She turned to Marcus, who offered a small, approving nod.
"It's over," Marcus murmured softly.
"No," Audrey replied, her voice steady and clear as glass. "It's just beginning."
Outside the courthouse, the steps were a chaotic storm of flashing camera lights and shouting reporters thrusting microphones toward the heavy oak doors.
"Ms. Vance! Ms. Vance! Over here! What are your plans for Vance Enterprises now that the assets have been seized?"
"Is it true you're liquidating the entire company?"
"How does it feel to put your own husband behind bars?"
Audrey paused at the top of the granite steps, looking out over the sea of journalists. The bright midday sun caught the sharp angles of her face, illuminating a woman who had walked through fire and emerged forged entirely of titanium.
She raised a single hand, and the shouting instantly died down into an expectant, breathless hush.
"Vance Enterprises as the public knew it no longer exists," Audrey said into the forest of microphones, her voice ringing out crisp, resonant, and completely devoid of emotion. "As of this morning, the remaining assets have been fully liquidated, the corporate registry dissolved, and every single cent of misappropriated capital has been recovered and redirected into a trust fund for child trauma rehabilitation and family protection services."
She paused, letting her dark eyes sweep across the camera lenses.

"To anyone who believes that hard work, loyalty, and sacrifice can be stolen by cowards hiding behind forged signatures and domestic cruelty: let this be your warning. You may think a mother returning from abroad has nothing in her suitcase but clothes. But if you back her into a corner, you will find out she brought proof, patience... and an executioner's axe."
Without another word, she turned and walked down the steps toward the waiting black town car, ignoring the chaotic flurry of questions that erupted behind her.
