Chapter 2 - The Confrontation in the CorridorThe Orderlies moved fast. Within ten minutes, Maya was transferred to a mobile gurney, hooked up to an IV drip of broad-spectrum antibiotics and fluid, and wheeled out of Exam Room 4.

I walked beside her, holding her cold, clammy hand as the hospital ceiling lights flashed overhead in a hypnotic rhythm. Every step felt like walking through wet cement. The air in the pediatric wing smelled of antiseptic and ozone, thick with an unspoken dread.
"Mom, I'm scared," Maya whimpered as we reached the double doors leading to the Surgical Intensive Care and Operating Suites.
"I know, baby. I know," I whispered, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "You are so strong. Dr. Reed is going to fix this. When you wake up, the pain will be gone. I promise you."
"Only one parent past the red line, ma'am," a nurse said gently, placing a hand on my shoulder.
I squeezed Maya’s hand one last time before letting go. "I love you, Maya. I’m right outside."
As the double doors swung shut, sealing my daughter into the sterile sterile abyss of the surgical floor, a commotion echoed from the far end of the hallway.
"I don't give a damn about your privacy policies!" a voice roared, sending a chill straight through my veins. "That is my daughter, and my wife is committing medical fraud! Where is Sarah Thorne?!"
It was Robert.
He was storming down the corridor, his face flushed red with fury, clutching a leather jacket over his work shirt. Two hospital security guards were trailing him, trying to reason with him, but he swept past them like a bull in a ring.
"Sarah!" he barked, spotting me outside the surgical doors. "What the hell is the meaning of this? You spent two hundred and fifty dollars of my money to bring her to an emergency room for a stomachache?!"
"Keep your voice down, Robert!" I snapped, stepping forward, every instinct screaming at me to shield the operating room doors with my body. "This is a hospital!"
"I don't care what it is!" he yelled, stepping into my personal space, his eyes wide with unhinged anger. "You ignored my texts! You bypassed my authority! I spoke to the front desk—they said something about emergency consent? You signed my name away?!"
"She has a cantaloupe-sized tumor inside her, Robert!" I screamed back, tears spilling over, unable to hold back the torrent of rage I had suppressed for years. "Her ovary is twisted! Her kidney is dying! She is in surgery right now because if they didn't operate, she could go into septic shock and DIE!"
Robert stopped cold, but the shock on his face lasted for only a fraction of a second before it hardened back into cold, suspicious disdain. "A tumor? Don't dramatize it, Sarah. You always exaggerate everything. She probably has a cyst. Girls get cysts all the time! You're letting these doctors rack up a hundred-thousand-dollar bill just to cover their own ass!"

I stared at him, genuinely horrified. "She is in surgery right now, Robert! They are cutting her open!"
"Without my consent!" he yelled, turning to the security guards. "I am her biological father and primary legal guardian! I did not authorize this surgery! I demand you stop this procedure immediately!"
