Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the PastMy blood ran cold. The air left my lungs in a sharp gasp.

"What... what are you talking about?" I stuttered, though my trembling voice betrayed me instantly.
Robert let out a cruel, mocking chuckle. "The Manila envelope, Sarah. The one stamped with Department of Human Services: Confidential Medical Records. The one you’ve been hiding behind your winter coats for fifteen years."
Dr. Lawson looked between us, sensing that the situation was devolving into something far beyond a medical emergency. "If this is a private matter, I suggest—"
"No, Doctor," Robert interrupted, turning to Dr. Lawson with a sick, triumphant smile. "It’s very relevant. You see, my wife here has been keeping a very big secret. Not just from me, but from Maya."
"Robert, please... don't," I begged, my voice breaking into a sob. "Not here. Not now. Maya is in surgery!"
"You want to talk about consent?" Robert stepped closer to me, his presence looming and suffocating. "You signed emergency consent today as her biological mother. But tell me, Sarah... are you really her mother?"
The hallway seemed to spin. The sterile white lights blinded me.
"What are you saying, Robert?" I whispered, tears streaming down my face.
"I found the adoption decrees, Sarah. The temporary ward papers from fifteen years ago," Robert said, his voice dripping with venom. "Maya isn't your biological daughter. And she isn't mine either. You brought her into my house, made me raise another man's mistake, and built our entire life on a lie!"
Dr. Lawson's eyes widened in shock. "Mrs. Thorne... is this true?"
I couldn't speak. My throat felt like it was filled with glass. The dark secret I had buried for fifteen years—the secret I swore to protect with my life to give Maya a normal, safe childhood—had just been ripped open in the hallway of a hospital while she lay cut open on an operating table.
"She was abandoned at the municipal shelter where I volunteered," I sobbed, sinking to my knees on the cold linoleum floor. "Her mother was a addict who died during childbirth. The system was going to place her in a abusive state group home. I took her... I forged the legal guardianship papers before I met you, Robert! I did it to give her a life!"
"You forged official legal documents!" Robert shouted, turning to the security guards. "She lied on the intake forms! She has no legal right to consent to surgery for that child! She is an illegal guardian!"
Before anyone could react, the red warning light above the operating room doors began to flash wildly. An alarm started blaring—a high-pitched, rhythmic screech that pierced through the corridor.

The surgical doors swung open violently, and a nurse rushed out, her face pale, her scrubs splatter-stained with deep red blood.
"Dr. Lawson!" she shouted frantically. "We have a crisis! The mass just ruptured during dissection! Patient's blood pressure is plummeting—60 over 40 and dropping! She’s going into anaphylactic shock and severe internal hemorrhage! We need extra units of O-negative NOW!"
