Chapter 7 - The Web of LiesThe silence in the waiting area was deafening.

I stared at Dr. Reed, then turned my head slowly toward Robert. My mind scrambled to process the words, pulling at threads of reality that refused to weave together.
"What... what are you talking about?" I whispered, my voice trembling. "Robert’s profile?"
"Fifteen years ago," Dr. Reed said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone, "Mr. Thorne submitted a DNA sample to the state medical registry following a workplace accident compensation claim. The genetic markers found in the fetal tissue extracted from Maya match Mr. Thorne's DNA with a 99.8% paternal probability."
I felt the ground slide out from beneath my feet.
"No..." I breathed, shaking my head violently. "No, no, no. That's impossible. Maya was abandoned at the municipal shelter where I volunteered! Her mother died in childbirth! I took her in because—"
"Because I put her there!" Robert screamed, breaking down completely, clutching his head in his hands as he fell back into his chair.
I turned to him, frozen in absolute horror. "What did you say?"
"I'm sorry, Sarah! I'm so sorry!" Robert wept, his voice cracking into pathetic, blubbering sobs. "Fifteen years ago... before I met you... I had an affair with a woman from out of state. She got pregnant. She refused to get an abortion. When she died in childbirth at the municipal clinic, the baby was left with no legal family. I couldn't let my family find out! I couldn't ruin my reputation!"
Tears of pure, unadulterated venom boiled in my eyes. "So you abandoned her?"
"I left her at the shelter where I knew you worked!" Robert cried, looking up at me with terrifying, bloodshot eyes. "I knew how desperate you were to have a child back then! I knew you would take her! I orchestrated the papers through an corrupt acquaintance in social services so you could 'adopt' her legally without questions! I married you six months later so I could stay close to her without ever having to admit she was my dirty secret!"
The room spun in violent circles.
The entire foundation of my life—my marriage, my sacrifice, my deep love for my daughter—was built on a monstrous, calculated game played by the man sitting in front of me. He didn't just let me raise another woman's child; he manipulated me into raising his illegitimate child, keeping us both under his thumb, using financial abuse and gaslighting to keep us from ever discovering the truth.
"You monster," I whispered, the words dripping with raw, lethal hatred. "You absolute monster."
"I did it for us, Sarah!" Robert reached out, trying to grab my hand, but I kicked his arm away with all the strength left in my body.
"Don't touch me!" I screamed. "You let her rot for months! You refused to pay for her medical care, knowing she was carrying a dead piece of your sick past inside her! You almost let your own daughter DIE to protect your pathetic secret!"
The two police officers stepped forward, their faces hardened, handcuffs already unclipped from their belts.
"Robert Thorne," the lead officer said, pulling Robert up from the chair and slamming him against the wall. "You are under arrest for child endangerment, criminal medical fraud, and falsifying legal documents."

"Sarah, please!" Robert cried as the metal cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "Tell them! Tell them you love me! I did it for our family!"
I didn't say a word. I turned my back on him as the officers dragged him screaming down the hallway.
