As he passed the guest suite, he noticed a sliver of light coming from beneath Emma’s door.
Curious, he pushed the door open an inch.
Emma was fast asleep in her small white bed, clutching a stuffed teddy bear tightly against her chest. On the bedside table sat a small, harmless music box playing a gentle lullaby.
Grace stood by the window, adjusting the curtains against the cool night breeze. She turned and saw him standing in the doorway.
“Is she asleep?” Lorenzo whispered.
“Like a rock,” Grace smiled softly.
Lorenzo walked into the room, adjusted the blanket over Emma’s small shoulders, and then turned back to Grace.
“You never have to worry about rent, security, or safety again, Grace,” Lorenzo said, his voice carrying the absolute, unbreakable weight of a mafia boss who kept his word. “As long as I breathe, this house is your fortress. And your daughter will never have to whisper when she speaks truth to power.”
Grace looked into his eyes—eyes that terrified empires, but held only warmth for them—and nodded slowly.
