Chapter 3 - The Federal Subpoena

Daniel’s face twisted in panic as he saw the emotional tide turning against him in his own fortress. He took a desperate step forward, trying to salvage whatever dignity he had left.
"Kesha, please... let's not air our dirty laundry in front of my colleagues and family," Daniel hissed, his voice dropping to a low, pleading register. "If you wanted financial support, if you needed something, you should have reached out through proper channels instead of staging a military-grade ambush on Christmas morning!"
I let out a short, cold laugh that made him flinch.
"Proper channels?" I stood up, smoothing the front of my uniform jacket. "Daniel, I am the proper channel. You seem to forget who you're talking to. You think I'm still that terrified girl weeping outside the courthouse? Let me introduce you to Commander Kesha Reynolds of the Texas Department of Public Safety's Special Investigations Division."
I motioned to my lead agent, Officer Brooks—who had stepped inside behind the tactical team, holding a thick manila folder embossed with state seals.
Brooks stepped forward, her expression completely professional, and handed the folder to General Vance, bypassing Daniel entirely.
"What is this?" General Vance muttered, adjusting his glasses as he opened the folder.
"That, General, is a comprehensive federal and state investigative file," I announced, my voice ringing out clearly across the silent hall. "Case file #889-TX-2026. It encompasses charges of interstate fraud, falsification of federal dependency documents under Title 10 of the United States Code, desertion of minor dependents, and deliberate evasion of child support obligations spanning eight years."
The color completely vanished from Daniel’s face. He lunged forward, his hand shooting out to grab the folder from General Vance’s hands.
"Don't touch that!" General Vance roared, snapping the folder shut and glaring at Daniel with undisguised disgust. "Stand down, Colonel! That's an order!"
Daniel froze, his hand hovering in mid-air, chest heaving. He looked like a man standing on the edge of a cliff during an earthquake.
"You... you investigated me?" Daniel stared at me in absolute horror. "You built a case against me?"
"You're a high-ranking officer in the United States military, Daniel," I said calmly, stepping closer to him until I was just inches away. I looked straight up into his terrified eyes. "When a criminal breaks the law in Texas, my unit investigates. When a federal officer commits fraud and abandons American citizens—even if those citizens happen to be his own children—justice doesn't care about rank, prestige, or Christmas parties at Fort Carson."
Victoria Sterling stared at Daniel in sheer disbelief, her hands trembling. "Daniel... is this true? Are you a fugitive?"
"Victoria, shut up! It's not what it looks like!" Daniel snapped, panic making his voice pitch up into an uncharacteristic squeak. He turned back to me, his hands shaking as he clasped them together. "Kesha... please. We can talk about this. In private. We can settle the financial part. Whatever you want—houses, trust funds, alimony—name your price. Just... call off your agents. If this gets out to the Pentagon, my career is finished. Everything I've worked for..."
"Everything you've worked for," I interrupted, my voice dropping to a chilling whisper, "was built on a foundation of lies and the discarded lives of four innocent children. You traded them for a star on your shoulder and a wealthy socialite wife."
I turned my back on him, looking down at my four children, who were watching the drama unfold with wide, innocent eyes.
"Come on, kids," I said softly, a warm smile returning to my face as I looked at them. "Grandpa and Grandma's house seems a little too cold for us today. Let's go home."
"Are we getting ice cream, Mama?" Noah asked brightly, taking my hand.
"The best ice cream in Texas, baby," I replied.
As we turned and began walking back toward the grand double doors, the sound of heavy boots echoed behind us. Two federal marshals, who had accompanied my tactical detail, stepped inside and flanked Daniel on either side, their hands resting casually near their service weapons.

"Colonel Daniel Reynolds," the lead marshal's voice boomed through the hall. "You are hereby served with a federal warrant for immediate appearance before a military tribunal and state court. You have the right to remain silent..."
Behind us, Eleanor Reynolds let out a final, piercing wriek of despair, collapsing back into her chair as the glittering Christmas celebration at Fort Carson dissolved into an absolute nightmare of her son's own making.
