Three months later, the spring wildflowers across the Texas hill country burst into brilliant displays of bluebonnets and Indian paintbrushes, painting the landscape in vibrant shades of blue and gold.
The federal military tribunal at Fort Hood had concluded its historic proceedings just two weeks prior. Former Colonel Daniel Reynolds had received a dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all retirement and pension benefits, and a multi-count federal conviction for fraud, official falsification, and interstate child abandonment.
While he faced a mandatory prison sentence in a federal correctional facility, my life—and the lives of my children—was moving forward with breathtaking momentum.
On a bright Saturday morning, the front lawn of our Austin home was filled with laughter, the smell of barbecue, and the sound of running feet. Noah, Ethan, Sophia, and Olivia were racing across the green grass, chasing our golden retriever puppy, while Lena Brooks sat on the porch patio sipping iced tea and laughing at their antics.

I stared at the screen, a slow, genuine smile spreading across my face.
