Chapter 8 - The True Victory

That evening, far away from the sterile briefing rooms of the Capitol and the cold marble halls of Fort Carson, our home in the Texas hill country was alive with the sound of pure, unadulterated joy.

"Mama! Look what Noah and I built!" Sophia yelled, running across the lawn holding a lopsided, magnificent fortress made entirely of cardboard boxes and duct tape.
"It's a military base, but for good guys!" Ethan added proudly, running up behind her with a plastic shield and a toy sword.
I sat on the porch swing, laughing as Olivia climbed into my lap, pressing her soft cheek against mine. Her steel-gray eyes—the exact replica of Daniel’s, yet entirely purified of his darkness—shone brightly in the twilight.
"Are you happy, Mama?" Olivia whispered, wrapping her small arms around my neck.
I kissed the top of her head, my heart swelling with an emotion so deep and fierce it brought a sudden, happy tear to my eye.

"I am the luckiest mom in the whole world, baby," I murmured, looking out at my four brilliant, resilient children playing freely beneath the Texas stars.
We had survived the storm. We had conquered the ghosts of the past. And as I looked toward the future hand-in-hand with my children, I knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, we were unbreakable.
