chapter 1

No one paid attention to the elderly woman sitting alone on the cold stone bench.
Her silver hair trembled in the wind. Her faded sweater looked years old. People walked past as if she didn't exist.
Then three little girls suddenly broke free from the crowd.
"GRANDMA!"
They ran toward her at full speed, throwing themselves into her arms.
The old woman burst into tears.
Everyone stopped.
No one knew why those children were crying... or why the grandmother looked as if she'd been waiting for this moment her entire life.
But what happened next would leave the entire town speechless.
Evelyn Carter hadn't seen her grandchildren in nearly six years.
Not because she didn't love them.
Because someone had made sure she never could.
Six years earlier, after her only son Daniel married the charming and ambitious Melissa, everything changed.
At first Melissa smiled sweetly.
She called Evelyn "Mom."
She brought flowers.
She promised they would always be one happy family.
It was all an act.
The moment Daniel accepted a prestigious executive position overseas, Melissa slowly isolated him from everyone who truly loved him.
She intercepted phone calls.
She ignored letters.
She changed phone numbers.
Whenever Evelyn asked to visit, Melissa always had another excuse.
"The girls are sick."
"They're busy."
"They're sleeping."
"They're traveling."
Years passed.
Eventually Daniel stopped calling too.
Evelyn wondered every night if her son had simply forgotten her.
What she didn't know was far more heartbreaking.
Melissa had convinced Daniel that his mother hated their marriage... and had chosen to disappear from their lives.
Meanwhile, Melissa told the children an even crueler lie.
"Grandma abandoned us."
The little girls grew up believing the woman who once baked cookies, read bedtime stories, and kissed their scraped knees had never loved them.
Every birthday Evelyn mailed presents.
Every Christmas she wrapped gifts with trembling hands.
Every package came back unopened.
"Return to Sender."
Still...
She never stopped hoping.
Every Saturday she quietly sat in the old town square—the same place where Daniel used to bring the girls to feed pigeons.
Maybe...
Just maybe...
Someone would remember.
On this warm afternoon, she almost gave up.
She slowly stood, picked up her worn handbag, and whispered,
"I guess today's not the day..."
Then she heard tiny footsteps.
Three little girls had wandered away from a nearby school performance.
The youngest suddenly froze.
She stared at the old woman with wide, confused eyes.
"I know her..."
Her older sisters frowned.
"No... Mommy said Grandma left us."
But something inside the youngest refused to believe it.
Without another word, she sprinted across the square.
The other two followed.
"Grandma!"
Evelyn turned around in disbelief.
Before she could say a word, all three girls wrapped their arms around her.
For the first time in six years...
She held her grandchildren again.
People around them applauded, some wiping away tears.
It looked like a miracle.
But across the street...
A black luxury SUV screeched to a stop.
Melissa stepped out.
Her face turned pale.
Because she knew one terrifying truth.
If the girls remembered their grandmother...
They might also remember the secret Melissa had buried for six long years.
May you like
And that secret could destroy everything she had built.
