CHAPTER 2: THE LITTLE GIRL’S SCREAM EXPOSED THE LIE
Melissa rushed across the square like a woman running from the truth.
“Girls! Get away from her!”
The three children froze.
Evelyn’s hands shook as she held them close.
“Melissa… please. I just want to see them.”
Melissa smiled coldly.
“You lost that right years ago.”
The oldest girl, Sophie, looked up with tears in her eyes.
“But Mommy… you said Grandma didn’t want us.”
The entire square went silent.
Evelyn’s face collapsed.
“What?”
Melissa grabbed Sophie’s wrist.
“We’re leaving. Now.”
But the youngest, Lily, suddenly pulled something from Evelyn’s old handbag.
It was a birthday card.
Then another.
Then another.
All addressed to the girls.
Every year.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Unopened.
Returned.
Lily’s lips trembled.
“You lied…”
Melissa’s face turned white.
Before she could speak, a man stepped out from the crowd.
Daniel.
The girls’ father.
He had returned early from his business trip.
And he had heard everything.
“Melissa,” he said quietly, “what did you do?”
Melissa tried to laugh.
“Daniel, this isn’t what it looks like.”
But Evelyn reached into her handbag one last time.
This time, she pulled out a small recorder.
“I kept every voicemail I ever sent,” she whispered. “And every message where Melissa told me to stay away… or she’d make sure I never saw my family again.”
Daniel pressed play.
Melissa’s voice filled the square.
“If you come near my children again, I’ll tell Daniel you’re unstable. He’ll believe me. Everyone will.”
Gasps spread through the crowd.
Melissa stumbled backward.
Daniel looked at his wife like he was seeing a stranger.
Then Lily ran to him, sobbing.
“Daddy… Grandma never left us. Mommy made her disappear.”
Daniel fell to his knees.
For six years, he had blamed the wrong person.
For six years, his mother had been alone.
And now the woman he trusted most had destroyed his family from the inside.
But just as Melissa turned to escape—
two police officers stepped into her path.
