Chapter 2 - The Files Under the Floorboards

Three days later, Harrison stopped by. He wasn't there for tea; he was there with a heavy manila envelope.

"You need to see this," he said, his voice devoid of his usual warmth. He spread documents across my kitchen table. They were financial records, emails from Meridian Pharmaceuticals, and a series of disturbing memos regarding the 'CardioRestore' project.

"I didn't bring these to hurt you," he said, watching my face. "I brought them because I know you've been protecting them. You’ve been the one managing their finances, haven't you? The one who made sure their credit remained pristine while yours suffered?"

My blood ran cold. The documents showed that Diana had been embezzling from the family accounts—my accounts—to cover her own failed investments. And Philip? He had signed off on every transfer, knowing it was my retirement, my medical fund, my life.

"They aren't just neglectful, Pamela," Harrison said, his hand covering mine. "They are exploitative."

"I thought they were just busy," I whispered, the betrayal tasting like ash. "I thought they were ambitious."

"Ambition is one thing. Theft is another."

I looked at the documents. The numbers were staggering. They had taken everything. I wasn't just a grandmother who had been ignored; I was a woman who had been systematically hollowed out by the people I loved most.

"What do I do?" I asked.

Harrison’s eyes were hard. "You reclaim your life. And you let them realize that the person they ignored is the only person who holds the keys to their destruction."
