Chapter 5 - The Price of Survival

The days that followed were a whirlwind of legal battles and public scrutiny. I stayed at a private residence provided by Harrison, disconnected from the world. My health began to stabilize, no longer weighed down by the constant emotional labor of keeping a fake family together.
But there was a lingering question. Harrison visited me every day. He was kind, he was present, and he was everything I had ever wanted in a partner. Yet, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was still in the shadow of my own past.
"You saved me," I told him one evening as we watched the sunset from his balcony. "But you also orchestrated their downfall. Why?"
He looked at me, his expression unreadable. "Because I don't believe in letting a beautiful thing be destroyed by rot. I saw what they were doing to you, Pamela. I saw a woman who had given everything, and I saw people who were draining her dry."
"Do you love me?" I asked, the question coming out before I could stop it.

He sat beside me, his hands finding mine. "I love the woman who had the courage to ask for a ride when she was dying. I love the woman who realized that being needed isn't the same as being loved. Yes, Pamela. I do."
It was the most terrifying, wonderful thing I had ever heard.
