Chapter 3 - The Gala of Lies

The Meridian Pharmaceuticals annual gala was the event of the season. Diana had sent me an invitation, hoping I would show up on Harrison’s arm as a trophy. She wanted the introduction. She wanted the prestige.

She didn't know that Harrison and I had spent the last week gathering more than just financial records. We had evidence of test results being altered, of the very device I had received being used as a test case for a product that wasn't ready.

I walked into the ballroom on Harrison’s arm. The room fell silent. I saw Philip and Diana across the floor, their faces lighting up with greedy recognition. They started toward us, champagne glasses in hand, ready to perform their roles.

"There's my favorite mother-in-law," Diana cooed, reaching for my hand. "Pamela, darling, you look... frail, but radiant. Dr. Wells, it is an honor. I have so much to discuss with you regarding—"

"I’m sure you do, Diana," I interrupted, my voice amplified by the room's acoustics.

I turned to Philip. "Philip, did you enjoy the vacation in the Maldives last month? The one paid for with the funds from the account you told me was 'locked for tax purposes'?"

The room went dead silent. Diana’s smile faltered. "Mom, what are you doing?"

"I’m done being the ghost in your house," I said, pulling a flash drive from my purse. "This contains everything. The embezzled funds, the forged signatures on my medical proxies, and, most importantly, the falsified data for the CardioRestore launch you're planning to present tonight."
