Chapter 1 - Through the Wall of SmokeThe heat inside Sterling Manor didn’t feel like normal summer warmth; it was a living, breathing predator. Smoke rolled across the ceiling of the second-floor gallery in heavy, bruised billows, smelling of melting lacquer, scorched velvet, and ancient cedar. The sprinkler system had failed—sabotaged years ago during a cheap renovation that Richard Sterling had signed off on to save a fraction of a tax bracket.

Clara dropped to her hands and knees, her damp wool shawl pressed tightly against her nose and mouth. Every breath tasted like copper and ash. Her vision swam, the ornate gold-framed portraits of dead Sterling patriarchs weeping black soot down their painted cheeks as the flames chewed through the wainscoting.
"Leo!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a raw, hacking cough.
"Clara! Here! Under the desk!"
The tiny voice cut through the roar of the fire like a needle. It came from the far end of the west corridor, near the library annex where Arthur’s private study used to be. Clara crawled frantically, ignoring the cracking sound of floorboards giving way to the inferno below. Her knees scraped against splintered hardwood, but she didn't feel the pain—only the terrifying clock ticking down in her chest.
She reached the mahogany partner’s desk. Beneath it, curled into a tight ball with his hands clamped over his ears, was Leo. His heavy metal leg braces were unbuckled and cast aside—he had clearly tried to crawl toward the main staircase before the thick smoke forced him back. His face was streaked with soot and tears, his pajamas singed at the hem.
"I can't walk," he sobbed, reaching up for her with soot-blackened hands. "My legs... they won't hold me. The door jammed!"
Clara grabbed him by under his arms, hauling his frail, eleven-year-old frame against her chest with a surge of adrenaline she didn't know she possessed. "I've got you. I'm not leaving you. We're getting out of here right now."
As she hoisted him onto her back, wrapping his arms tightly around her neck, a loud metallic crash echoed behind them. The ceiling of the west corridor collapsed, sending a wall of red-hot embers cascading down precisely where they had been standing three seconds prior. The heat singed Clara's hair, filling the air with the stench of burning keratin.
She turned sharply toward the service staircase—the only escape route left unconsumed by the initial blast. But as she burst back out into the open courtyard moments later, coughing violently and collapsing onto the damp grass, the nightmare shift changed entirely.
Standing a safe distance away by the ornate iron fountain, the surviving members of the Sterling family weren't weeping or cheering for their rescue.
Eleanor was smoothing down the lapels of her silk designer blouse, her eyes fixed coldly on Clara and the boy clinging to her back. Next to her, grandfather Richard Sterling stood leaning on his polished ebony cane, his expression carved from absolute ice.

They weren't relieved to see Leo alive.
They looked disappointed.
