Chapter 15 - The Open DoorLater that evening, after the crowds had departed and the lanterns across the courtyard began to glow softly in the twilight, Evelyn walked back toward the main entrance of the facility.

The heavy security gates of the old estate were long gone, replaced by a low, welcoming stone wall adorned with wildflowers. Anyone could walk up the pathway now. No one was locked out. No one was silenced.
As she reached the grand glass double doors of the lobby, she noticed a small, familiar object resting neatly on the polished marble reception desk.
It was the heavy brass key—the exact key that had unlocked the east wing library safe and exposed the multi-billion-dollar conspiracy. But it had been modified. A local artisan had welded the jagged metal teeth flat, turning the instrument of confinement into an artistic silver-and-brass engraving of an open book.
Taped to the base of the key was a small sticky note written in Noah’s clean, meticulous handwriting:
‘Leftovers for the new director. And don't worry—the doors are unlocked.’
Evelyn laughed out loud, the sound ringing softly through the empty, peaceful hall. She picked up the key, slipping it safely into her pocket alongside a small pack of crackers she always kept on hand just in case.

She walked out onto the balcony, looking out over the sprawling, illuminated grounds where children would laugh, heal, and grow safely for generations to come. The nightmare of the fire was finally behind them. The shadows had been swept away by the dawn.
Evelyn smiled into the cool night breeze, knowing that the story of Whitmore House hadn't ended in tragedy at all. It had only just begun.
