Not everyone in the sprawling conglomerate was willing to go down quietly with Charles Whitmore.

Deep within the steel-and-glass skyscrapers of Manhattan, a secret executive board meeting was taking place in a soundproofed conference room on the 48th floor.

At the head of the mahogany table sat Richard Sterling, the former Chief Operating Officer of Whitmore Global and Charles’s most trusted shadow. Spread out before him were copies of Daniel Whitmore’s original forensic audits—documents the federal prosecutors had missed during the initial sweep.

"The old man was arrogant," Richard muttered, swirling amber whiskey in a crystal glass. He looked across the table at Arthur Pendelton, the head of Whitmore Global’s international shell companies. "He thought he could burn the evidence down with a 12-year-old boy inside. All he succeeded in doing was drawing the full weight of the DOJ down on our necks."

"And the housekeeper," Arthur added nervously, adjusting his silk tie. "Evelyn Brooks. She’s currently sitting on the board of trustees for the new foundation, overseeing the liquidation distribution. If she uncovers the Zurich accounts tied to the Asian shipping routes, we’re all facing federal penitentiary time."
