Chapter 5 - The Boardroom ConfrontationThree days later, the atmosphere in the main boardroom of Martin Development was electric.

The quarterly investor summit was underway. Two hundred elite shareholders, venture capitalists, and board members filled the grand auditorium, waiting for the keynote address.

Backstage, Lucas Martin stood adjusting his silver-silk tie in front of a mirror. His face was a mask of cold, calculated perfection. The crisis with the Lexington property had been quietly neutralized; the evicted tenants had been relocated to luxury units with zero media leakage, and David Vance had been handed over to federal prosecutors without a whisper of public scandal.

Yet, something inside Lucas had shifted.

Every time he closed his eyes, he didn't see balance sheets or projected quarterly earnings. He saw a little boy clutching a threadbare stuffed elephant, and a mother with fierce, terrified green eyes standing protectively in front of her children.

"Mr. Martin, you're on in two minutes," whispered Sarah Jenkins, stepping into the backstage green room. She looked noticeably more subdued than usual, her corporate arrogance tempered by the near-death experience of her career three nights prior.

"Good," Lucas said flatly, turning around. "Is the property restructuring report finalized?"

"Yes, sir. All sixteen families from the Lexington complex have been permanently rehoused in uptown residential units, and the compensation packages have been disbursed," Sarah reported, clearing her throat nervously. "Also... Anna Silva has formally accepted her new position. She hasn't returned to housekeeping duties; she's been assigned to oversee VIP guest relations for our flagship properties."

Lucas gave a single, sharp nod. "Good. Make sure she doesn't face any internal gossip or backlash. If anyone whispers a word, fire them."

"Understood, Mr. Martin."

Lucas stepped out onto the massive stage.

Blinding stage lights hit him instantly. The audience erupted into thunderous applause. The billionaire CEO of Martin Development stood at the podium, a towering figure of absolute power and success.

He looked out over the sea of wealthy investors, ready to deliver his standard, ruthless speech about market domination and aggressive expansion.

He opened his mouth to speak—

Suddenly, the massive LED screens behind him flickered violently.

The crisp corporate logo of Martin Development vanished, replaced instantly by a live broadcast feed.

Gasps echoed through the auditorium.

On the screen was not a financial chart, but a high-definition investigative news report. And right in the center of the screen was a live video interview of a familiar, exhausted woman standing in front of a newly renovated apartment building.

It was Anna Silva.

And beside her stood a bitter, disheveled man holding a microphone—David Vance’s former second-in-command who had been fired and disgraced during the cover-up.

“...Yes,” the reporter’s voice boomed through the auditorium's state-of-the-art sound system. “Exclusive reports confirm that Martin Development systematically targeted low-income families, forcibly evicting them under fraudulent pretenses, only for the CEO, Lucas Martin, to orchestrate a massive multimillion-dollar cover-up using corporate funds to silence the victims and buy their silence!”

Dead silence fell over the entire two-hundred-person auditorium.

Every single head slowly turned from the giant screen to look directly at the stage.

At Lucas Martin.
