Chapter 9 - The Manhattan GalaThe annual Wellington Grand Charity Gala was the most exclusive social event of the year in New York City.

The grand ballroom glittered with crystal chandeliers, champagne fountains, and hundreds of elite guests in designer tuxedos and glittering evening gowns.

Standing near the edge of the grand ballroom, Anna looked breathtaking in a custom emerald-green silk gown that matched her striking green eyes. She still felt like she was living inside a fairy tale, especially when she felt a warm, strong hand rest gently on the small of her back.

Lucas stood beside her, impeccably tailored in a classic black tuxedo, his gaze entirely fixed on her.

"You look stunning," Lucas murmured softly, leaning down so his lips brushed her ear.

Anna blushed, looking up at him with a soft smile. "If someone had told me three weeks ago I'd be standing in this ballroom as your guest instead of cleaning it at midnight, I would have laughed in their face."

"Life has a funny way of correcting its mistakes," Lucas replied quietly, raising his champagne glass to hers.

Suddenly, the ambient murmur of the ballroom music ground to a grinding halt.

The grand double doors at the entrance of the ballroom swung open with a loud, dramatic bang.

Viktor Rostov strode into the room, flanked by two armed federal marshals and a dozen aggressive tabloid reporters flashing blinding camera lights.

A collective gasp echoed across the glittering ballroom.

Lucas’s jaw tightened instantly, his eyes turning into lethal shards of ice as he stepped protectively in front of Anna.

Viktor stopped dead center in the ballroom, holding a thick sheaf of legal documents high in the air.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen!" Viktor announced loudly, his voice echoing off the vaulted crystal ceilings. "I apologize for crashing the party. But I thought New York's elite deserved to know the real truth about our beloved billionaire CEO, Lucas Martin!"

Camera flashes blinded the room. Reporters surged forward like a pack of wolves.

"Is it true, Mr. Martin," shouted a reporter, shoving a microphone toward Lucas's face, "that your entire philanthropic campaign and corporate restructuring was orchestrated solely to cover up a personal conflict of interest with your new romantic partner, Anna Silva?"

Silence fell over the entire ballroom.

Anna’s face drained of color. She looked down, her hands trembling as the crushing weight of humiliation threatened to swallow her whole.

Lucas didn't blink. He didn't step back.

Before Viktor could even open his mouth to deliver the next blow, Lucas stepped forward, his towering presence commanding total submission across the entire room.

"Viktor," Lucas said, his voice terrifyingly calm, cutting through the silence like a razor blade. "You brought federal marshals into my hotel. You brought tabloid scavengers into a charity gala."

Viktor smiled smugly. "It's not a crime to expose a conflict of interest, Lucas. Your relationship with your former housekeeper compromises your fiduciary duty to your investors. We are filing an emergency injunction to strip you of your CEO title tonight."

The room erupted into absolute chaos. Investors shouted, reporters shoved each other for better camera angles, and panic rippled through the elite crowd.

Lucas looked at Viktor with absolute, unmitigated pity.

"You think this is a conflict of interest?" Lucas asked quietly.

He turned around and gently took Anna’s trembling hand in his, lifting it up so the entire ballroom could see.

"Let me make something crystal clear to every single person in this room," Lucas announced, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable power across the grand ballroom. "Martin Development belongs to me. Every share, every brick, every tower. And I don't give a damn about titles, stocks, or boardrooms."

He looked down into Anna's wide, tear-filled green eyes, a soft, genuine smile breaking through his hardened facade.

"Because the best thing I ever built in my entire life isn't this empire," Lucas whispered softly, loud enough for the microphones to capture every single word. "It's the family I found waiting for me in the dark."
