Chapter 1 - The Pounding at the DoorThe heavy brass knocker echoed like a gunshot through the foyer.

My husband, Arthur, froze mid-stride, his face draining from a confident flush into a sickly, gray pallor. The secure phone was still warm in my father’s hand, the encrypted line humming with the silent authority of the United States military.
"Open it," my father commanded. It wasn't a suggestion; it was an order backed by four decades of combat leadership.
Arthur’s knees trembled. He looked toward the front entrance, then frantically back at his laptop, where the fabricated $86,400 embezzlement logs still glowed in the ambient light. He took a hesitant step forward, but before his fingers could even graze the doorknob, the deadbolt rattled violently from the outside.
Click. Clack.
The door swung wide open, revealing not a lone visitor, but three men in tailored charcoal suits carrying heavy tactical briefcases, flanked by two Military Police officers in full dress uniform.
"General Carter," the lead investigator said crisply, stepping across the threshold with absolute authority. "NCIS Special Agent Vance. We secured the perimeter per your encrypted directive."
Arthur let out a sharp, breathless laugh, trying desperately to salvage his shattered facade. "This is private property! You have no jurisdiction here! I am a private citizen, and—"
"Shut your mouth," Agent Vance murmured, not even sparing Arthur a glance as he flashed a federal badge. He turned his piercing gaze toward me, sitting rigidly in the armchair where my father had placed me. "Ma'am, are you Nora Vance? We received the automated anomaly flag regarding the trust fund access points linked to military-grade financial routing."
My breath hitched. I looked at Arthur, whose eyes were wide with sheer, unadulterated panic. "Military-grade... routing?" I whispered.
My father stepped in, his expression carved from stone. "Arthur thought he was clever embezzling from a civilian charity trust. What he didn't realize is that the foundational seed money for that trust was established through a classified Department of Defense innovation grant tied directly to my command's oversight ledger. Every digital footprint he forged just pinged every alarm at the Pentagon."
Arthur stumbled backward, his back hitting the mahogany console table. "That's... that's impossible. I laundered it through shell companies!"
"You're an amateur playing a high-stakes game with professionals, son," my father said softly, stepping closer until the height difference loomed like a shadow over my husband. "And you made the fatal mistake of hurting my daughter."
Agent Vance snapped open his briefcase, pulling out a warrant signed by a federal magistrate judge within three minutes of the secure call. "Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, identity falsification, extortion, and physical abuse under federal enclave provisions. Anything you say can and will be used against you."
The heavy steel cuffs clicked around Arthur’s wrists with a terrifying metallic snap. As they hauled him toward the door, he looked back at me, his eyes burning with venom.
"You think you've won?" he screamed, his voice cracking as the officers pushed him past the threshold. "Without me, you're nothing! You'll lose the house, you'll lose the baby, you'll lose everything!"
The door slammed shut, cutting off his desperate screams. The sudden silence in the living room was deafening. I sat there, clutching my swollen belly as a wave of contractions washed over me.
Dad dropped to one knee beside my chair, his weathered hands trembling as he reached out to touch my face. "Nora... sweetheart, we're going to the hospital right now. You're safe."
"Not yet, Dad," I whispered, staring down at the laptop screen that Arthur had left unlocked. A secondary window was flashing in the corner—an automatic notification from a backup cloud server. "Look at the time stamp on that sync. He didn't just steal from the trust fund... he transferred something else just three minutes before you walked in."

Dad frowned, scrolling down to the newly downloaded file. He clicked it open, and the color drained from his face for the second time that evening.
It wasn't financial records. It was a scanned medical document with a horrifying title: Subject Identity Suppression and Psychiatric Isolation Protocol.
