Chapter 7 - The Breach at the North GateThe shrill wail of the estate’s security alarm pierced the quiet Virginia afternoon, echoing across the manicured lawns and shattering the peace we had fought so hard to build.

"All units, lock down the main manor! Seal all exterior access points!" the intercom blared, the voice of the head of my father’s security detail sharp and authoritative.

I scrambled out of my chair, clutching my seven-month-pregnant belly as a sharp spike of adrenaline flooded my system. Maria rushed to my side, her arms wrapping firmly around my waist to steady me.

"Nora, come on! We need to get to the reinforced safe room in the basement. General Carter already gave the standing order!" Maria urged, guiding me urgently toward the grand staircase.

"The letter, Maria! Grab the letter off the table!" I gasped over the wailing sirens.

Maria didn't hesitate. She swept the cream-colored cardstock off the coffee table, shoving it into her jacket pocket as she half-carried, half-guided me through the sprawling hallway toward the reinforced subterranean corridor beneath the manor.

Downstairs, the heavy steel security doors hissed shut, sealing us off from the outside world. Closed-circuit monitors mounted on the command wall flickered to life, projecting live feeds from the estate’s perimeter cameras.

On screen one, the North security checkpoint gate lay crumpled in twisted heaps of iron, smashed open by a heavy black sedan that had barreled straight through without stopping.

"Look at the license plate," Maria whispered, pointing a trembling finger at the monitor.

The high-definition camera zoomed in on the smoking wreckage of the sedan. The plates were registered to a shell company in Delaware—the exact same offshore corporate registry linked to Arthur’s hidden Cayman Island accounts.

Suddenly, the heavy oak front door of the main house upstairs shuddered under the force of a violent, repeated pounding.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

"They're inside the foyer," I whispered, staring at the monitor displaying the empty hallway of our living room.

Then, a figure stepped into the frame.

It wasn't a man in a tactical vest or an armed mercenary. It was a woman, elegantly dressed in a tailored trench coat, her dark hair swept back in a meticulous chignon. She looked directly into the security camera lens with a cold, unsettling smile, raising a small, leather-bound journal high in the air.

My breath caught. It was the woman from the note.

Elena Vance.

Before our security team could intercept her in the upper level, the intercom near the safe room console clicked open, broadcasting her voice directly into our secure bunker.

"Hello, Nora," Elena’s voice echoed smoothly through the speakers, dripping with eerie calm. "I know you're down there. And I know you've been reading my letters. Arthur always was a sloppy pupil... but he learned how to build a cage from the very best."

My hands shook as I gripped the edge of the metal console. "Who are you?" I called out into the intercom microphone. "What do you want?"

"I want what your husband stole from me," Elena replied, her tone suddenly turning sharp and venomous. "And more importantly... I want the Department of Defense encryption keys your father thinks he's hiding in this house. Open the safe room door, Nora. Or I promise you, you won't live long enough to see your baby take a single breath."

Before I could answer, the heavy steel keypad on the safe room door beeped rapidly as an unauthorized override code was punched in from the hallway console above.

The digital display flashed red: WARNING — SYSTEM OVERRIDE IN PROGRESS.
