Chapter 6 - Shadows from the PastTwo weeks passed in a blur of peaceful recovery, military security details, and quiet rehabilitation. The physical bruises on my arms had faded from purple and green into faint yellow shadows, mirroring the emotional scars that were slowly beginning to heal under the warm, protective embrace of my father’s home.

I was sitting in the sunroom, sketching designs for the baby's nursery, when Maria walked in carrying a silver tray with fresh lemonade and a stack of mail.
"Afternoon, Mrs.—err, Miss Carter," Maria corrected herself with a bright, warm smile. She had officially joined our household staff as my personal assistant and companion under military clearance.
"Thank you, Maria," I said, setting my sketchbook aside. "Any important mail today?"
"Mostly legal notices regarding Arthur’s ongoing asset forfeiture hearings," Maria replied, sorting through the envelopes. "Federal marshals are liquidating all of his personal properties to pay back the civilian and military trust funds he drained. But... there is one letter that caught my attention."
She pulled out a plain, unadorned manila envelope with no return address, stamped with a local D.C. postmark. My name and the estate's address were typed in stark, capital letters.
"Did you run it through the security scanner at the gate?" I asked, eyeing the envelope with sudden caution.
"Yes, ma'am. General Carter’s detail cleared it ten minutes ago. It's safe to open, but... the content is apparently for your eyes only."
Nodding slowly, I took the envelope from her tray and slid my finger under the flap. Inside was a single sheet of heavy cream-colored cardstock, folded neatly in half.
I unfolded it. Written in shaky, frantic handwriting were words that made my blood run cold:
“Nora, if you’re reading this, it means Arthur’s inner circle has completely abandoned him—just like they abandoned me. He told you I fell down the stairs, didn’t he? He lied. He pushed me. And if you think he’s locked away for good, you don't know who is really pulling the strings behind his corporate empire. Watch your back. The trial is a smokescreen.”
At the bottom of the note was a signature: Elena Vance.
My hands began to tremble violently. I dropped the letter onto the coffee table as if it were burning coals.
"Nora? What is it? Are you okay?" Maria asked, stepping forward with genuine alarm.
"Maria... call my father," I gasped, struggling to catch my breath as a cold sweat broke out across my skin. "Call him right now. Tell him to get back to the house immediately."
Before Maria could even reach her phone, the security intercom on the wall crackled to life with an urgent, sharp static burst.
"General Carter’s detail to all perimeter posts! We have an unauthorized civilian breach at the main gate! Repeat, unauthorized vehicle approaching the North security checkpoint!"

My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped bird.
Elena Vance wasn't a ghost from Arthur's past. She was still out there. And whatever web Arthur had spun ran much deeper, darker, and more dangerous than any of us could have ever imagined.
