Chapter 3 - Crossfire in the Nursery

"Well, well, well," Viktor drawled, stepping into the nursery with a swagger that made my stomach churn. His eyes swept over the luxurious room before landing directly on me, cowering behind the massive mahogany crib with a dying baby clutched to my chest. "Look at you playing house, Sarah. Running away from your debts like a coward. And look what you found—a billionaire's playpen."

Viktor’s gaze shifted to Lorenzo Rossi, who stood tall and unyielding in the center of the room, blocking Viktor's direct line of sight to me and Leo.

"You must be the big boss," Viktor mocked, tilting his head with a cocky grin. "Lorenzo Rossi. They say you own half the city. Too bad you couldn't keep your own kid alive, huh? Word on the street is the heir is slipping away. Mind if I take the maid off your hands? She owes my boss a lot of money, and we collect our debts in full."

Lorenzo didn't blink. His face was a mask of carved granite.

"You stepped foot in my house," Lorenzo said softly, his voice carrying a weight that made the air feel heavy. "You pointed a weapon in the direction of my son. And you threatened my staff."

"Your staff?" Viktor laughed, raising his silenced pistol. "She's a runaway debtor—"

Crack.

The sound was shockingly muted, but the impact was absolute. Lorenzo’s weapon fired with military precision. Before Viktor could squeeze his own trigger, a bullet tore cleanly through his shoulder, spinning him off balance. The crowbar slipped from his hand, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.

Viktor screamed, clutching his bleeding shoulder, stumbling backward against the nursery wall. "Kill him! What are you waiting for?!" he roared into the hallway.

From the shadows of the corridor, two more armed enforcers rushed forward, weapons raised.

"Get down!" Lorenzo barked, grabbing my arm and pulling me flat onto the plush nursery rug just as a volley of suppressed gunfire chewed through the air above us. Wood splinters rained down like confetti, and crystal vases shattered into a million sparkling fragments.

Leo began to wail—a sharp, desperate cry that pierced through the chaos of the gunfire.

"He's hungry again!" I cried out over the noise, feeling my milk surge painfully in my chest as the adrenaline spiked through my veins. "Mr. Rossi, if he doesn't latch on right now, the stress is going to send him into shock!"

Lorenzo glanced down, seeing the terrifying reality of his son's fragile state. In a display of ruthless efficiency, Lorenzo rolled onto his side, kicked upward with steel-toed boots, and caught the first rushing enforcer squarely in the chest, sending him crashing backward out the door.

With his other hand, Lorenzo fired twice through the opening, neutralizing the threat with terrifying accuracy.

The hallway fell into an eerie, smoking silence.
