Chapter 6 - The Shadow on the Wall

Lorenzo went completely still. The silence stretched between us, thick and electric, charged with unspoken questions and shared grief.
"The doctor said he needs specialized, round-the-clock nutrition for at least three months until his digestive system fully matures," Lorenzo said slowly, his gaze lingering on my face. "Donor milk from banks isn't working. Formula makes him violently ill. You are... medically and miraculously the only person on this earth who can keep him alive right now."
"Then I'm not leaving," I said, my voice firming with a sudden, fierce resolve. "Not until he's strong enough to stand on his own two feet. Lily is gone, Mr. Rossi. But as long as your son needs me, I have a reason to wake up in the morning."
A slow, profound transformation crossed Lorenzo’s face. For the first time all night, the legendary mafia boss looked like a man who had finally been granted permission to breathe after drowning for months.
He stood up, walked around the desk, and knelt beside my chair. Gently, with calloused, steady hands that had ended dozens of lives, he brushed a stray lock of hair away from my forehead.
"You stay," Lorenzo said, his voice deep and resonant. "You stay right here in the master wing next to the nursery. You will be protected by my personal guard. And no one—absolutely no one—will ever harm a hair on your head again."
For the next two weeks, the Rossi estate became an entirely different world.
I lived in a sunlit suite furnished with every luxury imaginable, though my favorite place remained the nursery rocking chair. Leo thrived under my care. Day by day, the frail, trembling infant grew into a strong, chubby-cheeked baby who flashed gummy smiles whenever he heard my voice.
Lorenzo spent hours in the nursery with us. The terrifying mafia kingpin melted away into a devoted, exhausted father who read bedtime stories in a deep, soothing baritone and learned how to change diapers with surgical precision.
We grew dangerously close. In the quiet hours between midnight feedings, we shared our grief—he spoke of his late wife who had died giving birth to Leo, and I spoke of my little Lily. Our sorrow formed a bridge between our very different worlds, turning into something warm, tender, and undeniable.
But peace in the underworld never lasts.
Late one stormy night, while Lorenzo was away meeting with syndicate council members in the city, I woke up to a strange sound.

It wasn't the nursery door. It was the heavy iron security grate leading from the private elevator straight into our suite.
I froze in bed, clutching Leo tightly against my chest. The bedroom door creaked open slowly, revealing a tall, silhouetted figure holding a silenced pistol—and a familiar, mocking smile that made my blood run cold.
