Chapter 18 - The Unbroken Circle

Six months later, the Westchester estate looked less like an impregnable mob fortress and more like a vibrant, sprawling family home.
The security guards still patrolled the perimeter gates, and the high-tech cameras still monitored the access roads, but the oppressive, lethal tension that had once choked the hallways had been replaced by the sound of laughter, music, and the patter of little running feet.
Today was a special day.
Out on the expansive green lawn near the rose garden, a white canopy had been erected, surrounded by white folding chairs and a towering, four-tier chocolate birthday cake.
Ethan—now fully recovered, healthy, and a full year older—was running around the lawn with Lily, playing tag while Marcus the chef stood nearby supervising a team of caterers with a watchful eye that missed nothing.
I stood on the stone patio, wearing a stunning emerald-green summer dress, watching the children play.
A pair of strong arms slipped around my waist, and warm lips pressed softly against the back of my neck.
“You’ve been staring at the cake for ten minutes,” Dominic murmured, resting his chin on my shoulder. “Are you worried someone’s going to try and poison it again?”
I turned around in his embrace, wrapping my arms around his neck and smiling up at him. He was dressed in a sharp linen suit, looking every bit the powerful patriarch, yet the fierce, cold edge in his eyes had entirely melted away when he looked at me.
“Not a chance,” I whispered. “Lily stationed herself right beside the dessert table twenty minutes ago with a plastic toy sword. Anyone even looks at the frosting, she’s prepared to strike.”
Dominic laughed, a rich, resonant sound that made my heart skip a beat just like it had the first time he knelt before my daughter in the ballroom.
“She takes after her mother,” Dominic said softly, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes. “Fearless. Unyielding. The best thing that ever happened to this family.”
Down on the grass, Ethan shouted, “Blow out the candles, Lily! It’s time!”
Guests—consisting of trusted friends, legitimate business associates, and loyal staff members—began to gather around the table, clapping and singing in unison.
Dominic took my hand, intertwining our fingers tightly, and led me down the stone steps toward the children.

As Lily turned around, her face smeared with a smudge of chocolate frosting and her eyes shining with absolute joy, she looked up at both of us and smiled proudly.
I squeezed Dominic’s hand, feeling the solid, unshakable warmth of his grip. The ghosts of the past were gone, the shadows had faded into the light, and as we stood together as a family beneath the sunlit Westchester sky, I knew that nobody—no syndicate, no enemy, and no threat in the world—would ever be able to break what we had built.
