Chapter 9 - The Betrayal Unmasked

“End of the line, Clara,” a cold, familiar voice whispered from the darkness outside the shattered door.
I froze, my blood turning to ice. Even distorted by fear and adrenaline, I recognized that voice instantly.
It was Vincenzo.
He lowered his weapon slightly, his injured shoulder bleeding sluggishly through his black tactical shirt, but his eyes were hard, devoid of any warmth or loyalty.
“Vincenzo… what are you doing?” I breathed, shielding Lily with my body as she began to cry softly from terror.
“Saving my own skin,” Vincenzo replied bitterly, reaching inside to grab my arm and haul me out into the freezing mountain air. “Dominic is a dying breed. His obsession with honor and family is going to sink the whole syndicate. Petrov offered me half the shipping ports in New York if I delivered his son’s head—and eliminated the witnesses who ruined the plan.”
“You?” I gasped, horror washing over me. “You were the one who leaked the sensor codes? You forged my signature?”
“It was too easy,” Vincenzo sneered, pressing the cold steel of his pistol against my neck. “Everyone trusts the head housekeeper until things go wrong. And you made the perfect scapegoat.”
Across the clearing, the other security operative lay motionless beside the snowbank, eliminated by his own captain before he even realized the betrayal.
Vincenzo dragged me toward a waiting black sedan parked fifty yards down the unpaved access road. “Get in the car. Both of you. If the kid makes a sound, I put a bullet in her mother right now.”
Lily screamed, wrapping her tiny arms around my neck so tightly I could barely breathe. “Mommy! Don’t let him take us!”
“Leave her alone!” I sobbed, tears streaming down my freezing cheeks. “Take me! Just let my daughter go!”
Vincenzo laughed harshly, shoving us both toward the open rear door of the sedan. “In our line of work, loose ends don't get a parting gift.”
He raised his pistol, aiming directly at my chest, preparing to finish what Thomas had started in the Westchester ballroom.
Suddenly, a blinding beam of high-intensity headlights cut through the darkness of the mountain road.
Before Vincenzo could pull the trigger, the roar of a high-performance engine drowned out the wind, and a sleek black sports car slammed at terrifying speed directly into the side of Vincenzo’s sedan.

Metal crumpled in an ear-splitting shriek of impact. Vincenzo was thrown violently through the air, crashing hard against the asphalt several yards away.
The driver’s door of the sports car flew open, and Dominic Moretti stepped out into the freezing night air, holding a smoking pistol in his hand.
