Chapter 10 - The Queen’s Gambit (The Unexpected Finale)Forty-eight hours later, the grand ballroom on the eighty-eighth floor was transformed once again. But there were no debutantes in silk gowns this time. There were no cameras, no champagne toasts, and no nervous chatter.

Instead, the massive hall was filled with absolute, tomb-like silence.
Standing in a semi-circle around the polished marble floor were the three Envoys of the European Council—impeccably dressed elderly men in midnight-blue coats, flanked by a dozen armed European bodyguards wearing tactical gear.
At the head of the staircase stood Kendrick Ashford, wearing a flawless black tuxedo, his hand resting calmly on the holster beneath his jacket.
Beside him stood Willa. She wore a stunning, custom-made crimson velvet gown that seemed to catch the golden light of the crystal chandeliers like spilled wine. Her chin was held high, her posture regal, embodying every ounce of the Sterling legacy.
And right at her feet, calmly resting his massive head on the hem of her gown, was Titan.
The lead Envoy, an elderly European man with piercing blue eyes named Lord Vance, stepped forward, his cane clicking sharply against the marble.
"Kendrick Ashford," Vance spoke, his voice dry and authoritative. "You are harboring a financial liability. Under Article Nine of the Global Syndicate Charter, the Sterling debt must be settled immediately. Hand over the girl, and the European Council will allow you to keep your eastern territory."
Kendrick didn't move an inch. He slowly descended the grand staircase, his heavy footsteps echoing through the cavernous hall like a metronome of doom.
"Article Nine applies to debtors and traitors, Lord Vance," Kendrick said smoothly, stopping just a few feet away from the elderly envoy. "Miss Sterling is neither. The audit proves her family was innocent. Therefore, your council has no legal claim over her life—or her assets."
Lord Vance smiled thinly, raising a gloved hand. Behind him, four guards raised their weapons, their laser sights painting red dots across Kendrick’s chest.
"In our world, Mr. Ashford, law is written by whoever holds the loaded gun," Vance remarked coldly. "And right now, we hold the advantage."
"Do you?"
Willa’s voice rang out clearly across the silent ballroom.
She stepped down the staircase, moving with effortless grace until she stood right beside Kendrick. With a swift, deliberate motion, she reached into her crimson handbag and pulled out a heavy, polished gold flash drive, holding it up for all to see.
Lord Vance’s eyes narrowed. "What is that?"
"This," Willa said, her voice steady and echoing with absolute power, "is the master key to every offshore Swiss account, shell corporation, and hidden asset belonging to the European Council. Six years ago, before my father was murdered, he didn't just hide our funds—he backed up every single illegal transaction your council made across the globe."
Willa pressed a small button on the side of the flash drive, and a red indicator light began to blink rhythmically.
"A dead-man’s switch," Willa continued, locking her gaze onto Vance’s suddenly pale face. "If my heart stops beating—or if my fingerprint isn't entered into this server every twelve hours—the entire financial architecture of the European Syndicate goes public to every intelligence agency, Interpol, and federal prosecutor on Earth."
The silence in the ballroom became absolute.
The four guards lowering their weapons didn't even need to be told; the sheer terror on Lord Vance’s face said it all. The invincible European Council, which had ruled the global underworld from the shadows for centuries, had just been checkmated by a twenty-six-year-old waitress.
Vance stared at the flash drive, his hands trembling slightly against his cane. "You... you're bluffing."
"Try me," Willa challenged softly.
Kendrick stepped in closer, his dark eyes locking onto Vance with a lethal, predatory promise.
"You came here looking for a sacrifice, Lord Vance," Kendrick whispered, his voice vibrating with deadly authority. "Instead, you just walked into a trap. Now turn your men around, walk back down that elevator, and tell the council that the East Coast syndicate—and the Sterling estate—are officially off-limits."
For a long, agonizing moment, no one moved.
Then, slowly, Lord Vance bowed his head in bitter, forced defeat. He signaled his guards to lower their weapons.
"You win, Miss Sterling," Vance rasped, turning around with his entourage and heading back toward the elevators without another word.
The heavy doors slid shut, sealing their retreat.
The ballroom emptied of enemies, leaving only Kendrick, Willa, little Penny—who peeked out from behind a pillar with a tiny smile—and the faithful mastiff, Titan.
Kendrick exhaled slowly, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his handsome face. He turned to Willa, his dark eyes shining with a deep, unbreakable respect.
"Well, Katherine," Kendrick murmured, reaching out to take her hand. "It seems I was wrong about you."
"About what?" Willa asked, raising an eyebrow.
May you like
"I thought I was rescuing a nobody," Kendrick said softly, pulling her against his chest as the golden crystal chandeliers bathed them in light. "I didn't realize I was kneeling to a queen."
Willa smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck as little Penny ran over to hug them both, completing a circle that no syndicate in the world could ever break again.
